Forums Payment cards Other payment cards Curve card keeps declining/getting blocked

  • Skywalker 928 posts

Afternoon all, my Curve card has a Capital on Tap sitting behind it.

All was going well until yesterday, when the card declined in local shop and then in local supermarket – error message “blocked, contact card issuer”.

Contacted Capital on Tap who stated I needed to enter chip and pin transaction for underlying card – so I did so.

This morning, one automated payment debited successfully from Curve and one online payment was made with Curve successfully using underlying Capital on Tap – no problems

Just tried to buy something on Amazon with Curve “transaction blocked, contact card issuer” –

But Capital on Tap cannot see the Amazon transaction – in fact, they cannot see the local shop, local supermarket or Amazon transactions.

Anyone else with Curve/Capital on Tap having the same issues?

    A bit confused!

    TIA

Having exact same issue! Did one transaction today was fine. Wanted to do another and nothing, same error, underlying doesn’t even sees the transaction. Tried several cards and several retailers and nothing worked.
Barclays and Virgin cards for me.

Think the issue is with curve. My curve card was blocked at Argos yesterday. Just got an email from curve with this explanation:

” Please note that, at the moment, transactions to ARGOS aren’t allowed with Curve. This means that at this time you won’t be able to use your Curve card with this merchant.

The reason is that we consider making such transactions with a Curve card to be high risk. This is a security measure that’s been put in place after a careful review.

I’m sorry for any inconvenience caused by this and hope this clarifies the situation!”

@ Rui N. – sorry to see you’re having similar issues.

Curve’s customer service is awful, so it’s going to be interesting to see how this one gets resolved!

    @Dubs
    – nonsense excuse from Curve – on my card for example, there is currently have a 7% cashback offer with Argos, as well as an ‘always active’ cashback offer – why offer a cashback offer with a merchant they deem as high risk?

Shopping at Argos is high risk but paying off a credit card with another credit card isn’t? What the…??!! Are you feeling okay, Curve?

It may be that they’ve temporarily blocked Argos because fraudsters are using stolen Curve details there. Or perhaps it has something to do with that recent 1% surcharge on certain MCCs

I’ve had several transactions at Argos declined in the last, so with them it’s not new. Perversely I was only trying to use Curve to take advantage of their Argos cash back offer!

    Ctrl + Alt + Del.
Remove the underlying card and add it back.

Spoke at length with Capital on Tap.

On the matter of the declined and invisible transactions, they said after looking more closely at my account, Curve isn’t even requesting the funds from them, which is why Capital on Tap has no visibility of the transactions.

@Rui N. – that may be the same for your transactions too?

If it is the case that Curve isn’t even requesting the funds from the underlying card issuer, then it is disingenuous of Curve to say that the “card issuer blocked the transaction”, when in fact it is Curve that is not working.

    Ctrl + Alt + Del.
Remove the underlying card and add it back.

    Tried that too – didn’t resolve 🙁

Maybe you’re shopping at a high risk retailer such as Asda, Sainsbury’s or Tesco. Naughty!

Don’t worry though cos you’ll still be able to pay off your Amex. 🙄

@Skywalker that’s the exact question I emailed back, and if it was such a high security risk why no information to customers. Was only tring to take up the cashback offer while shopping in sainsburys where the argos is.
The response back was ” I’m double checking this for you with a relevant team and will reach out to you as soon as possible with the information.”

My underlying card was barclays credit card.

My card has been blocked for almost 2 weeks now. Curve support has been next to useless in getting any response.

I’ve lodged a complaint (which will probably get a response from Curve in about a year or so).

They’ve managed to charge me twice for the annual fee £150 and £179.90 on 9th May .. yet keep insisting I’ve only been charged £179.90 photo of my Lloyds account with two subscription payments didn’t seem to be enough … have to wait for the pdf statement in a week or so

When it works it’s great when something goes wrong they are close to useless.

Something weird is going on with Curve. I’ve never had mine declined, but yesterday whilst moving around central London it refused to light up green at the TFL turnstiles multiple times on the first or 2nd attempt, after waiting a few seconds and then trying for a 3rd time it finally worked and opened the barriers. Needless to say, it didn’t make me particularly popular on the LU.. There is no record of any declines in the app. If this happens again later this week I’ll have to swap it out for another card.

Have also had an Argos decline (really frustrating as it’s one of my cashback retailers) but otherwise it has been working ok.

I keep getting declined with Amazon. Don’t even get the usual alert to approve the transaction in the app. No notification, and just a straight decline. Doesn’t even show up as a decline in the list of transactions. So something very weird.

Thought of raising a section 75 dispute on curve, against curve – oh the irony

Curve is not a credit card, so you can’t raise a section 75 dispute on it. You can with the underlying credit card against curve of course in this instance.

@aviosnewbie33 that’s how it goes for me as well. Over 1 week not working now

My card is now frozen, and I cannot unfreeze it in the app – I have tried on two phones, both android and iphone.

For absolutely no reason at all, my Curve card appears to have been stopped.

    1. No dodgy transfers
    2. Payments to regular companies
    3. No cash machine withdrawals

    – just basic transactional card usage.

I know Curve still carries some benefits but are they really strong enough for all the hassle you’re currently getting?

Happy to continue taking advantage while it continues to work seamlessly but if this ever happens to me, to the extent that you’re currently experiencing, the card will be shredded and the app uninstalled. Life’s too short to play silly buggers with Curve these days for a few extra Hilton Honors points.

Almost 4 weeks of my card being blocked with zero communication aside

We’re really sorry this is taking longer than expected! Please be advised that repeated replies to the email thread will cause our interactions system to push your query back into the queue. We apologise for this.

The relevant team is quite busy at the moment so we really appreciate your patience in this matter!

Official complaint put in – this is just a joke of a company.

I agree with the ‘life too short’ sentiment and I fully intend to close it – they need to respond to and resolve my complaint first before closure.

Thankfully I removed my cards before the card was locked/blocked.

Curious to know how many transactions are not through apple pay or google pay.
I have used it only with apple pay from day 1 (except online obviously) and had no issues so far (hope not jinxing it!).
