Forums Payment cards American Express Enough value to keep both Gold and Platinum?

Hi everyone – appreciate your thoughts on my current card conundrum, as my Gold card is up for renewal at the higher fee(!) and my OH now has a Platinum which we are intending on keeping – we’ve been using THC and FHR quite a bit this year and found it worthwhile.

On the Gold, we do generally just hit all 5 “Reward as you go” within the year, however we don’t religiously use all the Deliveroo credits each month, and having a Platinum – THC and PP is an overlap.

We also have the free Barclaycard Avios which we manage to spend £20k each year – and have earned upgrade vouchers “for free”. We used to live very close to Gatwick (which worked great with the Gold 2x airline spend) so BA in general isn’t our first choice of airlines, but we have now moved near the Docklands where Heathrow/City is just as convenient so we could start more flying BA – 2-4-1 voucher wasn’t really useful for us before we moved but I perhaps am on the fence to take the leap for the paid BA Amex, given the higher fee and practically same earning rate as Gold though (am I silly to think this?).

My gut instinct is to ditch the Gold as I’m not sure the £195 is worth 12,500 points at more than 1p per point, but obviously it does translate more points for I redeem. I might be tempted to play the game and try the retention offer, then upgrade to Platinum myself to get the bonus, before retiring my OH’s Platinum.

Your insights would be much welcomed!

Can you hit the spend target bonuses on the Gold?
    How much value is deliveroo?
How much value in the Gold offers?
How much value in the additional points for airline spend?

If all of the above is greater than £200 keep the Gold for spending and the plat for it’s benefits I’d say

Thanks! Many of the Gold offers would also appear on other cards and max Deliveroo is £120 – which in a way I’d be buying 12.5k points for £75 ish. Slightly different perspective I suppose!

Will have to look through my transactions in year to see how much the airline bonus points are worth for me I guess.

Go get some retention points from Amex to help make the maths work. They hand them out like penny sweets on those two cards

Refer your OH for the gold, extract your MR and then close yours, repeat next year the other way around. If you’ve got plat, gold is only worth it when it’s free.
