I’m planning to book J reward flights for a USA holiday using a 2-4-1 voucher. I will book the outbound at T-355 and call 2 weeks later to book the inbound and have it added to the booking. Unfortunately, due to having little flexibility, the dates of the outbound and return flights will fall on either side of my Silver expiry date.
Presumably, I will still be eligible for free seat selection for the outbound flight (pre Silver expiry), but what about the inbound (post Silver expiry)?
You can choose seats if you are Silver at the time (of seat selection), so Yes for the outbound as long as you do it before you expire, but No for the return.
I assume you are referring to your card expiry date as that is what matters, not the 8th of the month (currently) collection year end.
But you will drop to Bronze, so still get a shot 7 days before the flight.
If you’re Silver when you make the booking, you can select the seats for free. You might subsequently lose them due to an equipment change or cancellation but otherwise they should stick.
Will the OP be able to select the seats while he is Silver even if the flight is AFTER the expiry?
Basically: can you select the seats and then not touch the booking and hope they remain selected?
(I have that as I selected the 1st row of a EU J class booking with BA and now don’t want to open the booking and risk losing those seats)

my silver status expires at the end of April, I’ve reserved seats for flights in august. So definitely possible. I gather, as per northernlass, the reservation doesn’t get cancelled on the day I drop to bronze. But any equipment change etc and the seat reservation will go.
My thinking was that even though BA add the return leg to the original booking after Silver expiry date, because the date I made the booking in the first place was prior to Silver expiry, I might have free seat selection for the entire booking i.e. outbound and inbound.

Don’t think that will work. Once you drop you cannot select seats for free and that’s as much as the system knows.

Unfortunately not. Free seat selection depends on status on the day you try to book the seat so if you are Bronze on the day you try you will be invited to pay to reserve unless it is 7 days to the minute before scheduled departure of the flight.
It is the one benefit of Silver that I truly miss having given I get all the other benefits via a Club ticket.
Some comments seem to be mixing up whether your silver status expires between booking the outbound and inbound or flying the outbound and inbound. If you have silver status when you book the flights you can choose seats, irrespective of your status when you fly.
Annoyingly I selected some seats on a Qatar leg whilst silver, have since dropped to bronze and thanks to an infamous QR equipment swap I’ve lost the seat selection and they now want cold hard cash to restore it 🙁
