Forums Other Destination advice Guatemala in February

Hi, we’ll be spending a week in Guatemala, flights are booked but no hotels yet.

Does anyone have recommendations of places to stay, things to do? We’ve heard the volcano hikes, the lakes and Antigua town are the highlights.

    Thank you in advance.

We spent 3 nights each at Hotel Posada del Angel, Antigua / Casa Palopó, Lake Atitlan / La Lancha Resort, Lake Peten Itza last year which was about right.

Cutting that down for your itinerary, I would not bother with more than 2 nights on Peten Itza. Tikal is an amazing trip (we drove ourselves everywhere), but Flores was a waste of time – sort of a backscratcher low budget version of Antigua. We did do a great hike in the rainforest not far from our hotel (don’t forget the DEET!)

Antigua we loved and plan to go back, but it’s basically a mooch about in shops looking at architecture kind of place, so maybe reduce a day there too.

All the places we stayed were outstanding, though Casa Popolo is very pricey $450 a night and an expensive restaurant).

If you do hire a car, don’t go for the lowest model. The country is very hilly and we had a few moments where the car almost didn’t make it up a hill. To get into Casa Popolo we needed to roll back from the opened gate and gun it along the drive to get enough momentum. We used Hertz for everything and booked without insurance, covering the car with Curve. Also beware Google Maps navigation can pick some tricky dirt tracks when you visit hill towns.

Nothing to add but I was in Antigua last week and it was lovely. Really enjoyed all the walking about. We also did an ATV tour which was fun.
