Forums Other Destination advice GVA-LHR-MAN (transit procedure).

Having booked a flight on the above route (BA T5) it occurred to me that I have never transited LHR from a foreign to a domestic flight. I assume you have to clear the UK border then check in again? Following this I assume you have access to the T5 lounges in the same way as if departing for a foreign flight? I would also be interested to know what the position is with DF booze in terms of the liquid rules- I know they offer to seal it in the DFS but would this satisfy the LHR security regime? I once had a nice bottle of Havana 7Y/O confiscated at CDG when on AF from HAV and don’t want to fall foul again!
I have a similar transit coming up in October MIA LHR MAN so Advice from MAN regulars would be most welcome.

It depends – All on one ticket with luggage checked through, as long as you have your boarding pass you follow the purple flight connection signs, pass through border control and security and you enter into the T5 departure area. If you’re coming from a seperate ticket and hand baggage only you can do the same. If you need to recheck your luggage then you’ll need to pick it up, and then go landside and check in again.

Liquids – wouldn’t risk it. There will be some ass that will confiscate it irrespective of the rules or whether it’s sealed. Lost a very expensive bottle of olive oil at FRA that way that was bought duty free in Cairo.

Lounges depend on your inbound and ticket.

In future if you’re going to ask a question like this please post airline and ticket class as well. Details help answer your question.

I think you’ll be fine with alcohol at LHR, as long as it’s properly sealed (have a copy of the relevant policy (which is very clear) to hand, as well, in case you do get the ass!) They might pull a face and take it away for swabbing, but I’ve seen a few folk of late transiting with sealed booze purchases.

Pretty sure duty free in a sealed LAG bag with a receipt from Europe is OK

Never had an issue with duty free liquids in sealed bags within Europe.

Please stop with the petty insults of security staff!

If the item is in the STEB with the receipt in it then there will be no problems with it at LHR.

The only requirement above that they have at LHR is to put it in a separate tray and they’ll usually give you one with a padded bottom to stop it rolling about as it goes through the system.

Absolutely. If you have served your time doing a customer facing minimum wage job, you are entitled to criticise.

On one occasion, with no preamble whatsoever, a male member of the security staff at T5 removed my HRT gel from its ziplock bag and squirted some into his hand.

I rest my case. Though I did do a few badly paid, rubbish jobs in my youth!

    Thanks all,

No checked bags and one ticket ( sorry for not making that clear!), so I’ll risk the sealed bottle and follow the purple signs into T5 Deps, hopefully with time for lunch in the B gates lounge before the MAN flight!

You asked for advice from MAN regulars in your OP so here’s my other 2 penn’orth which is the LHR-MAN flights are often delayed, especially as it gets later into the evening, and they sometimes like to “surprise” you with last minute gate changes.

They may also try to tempt you to check in your hand baggage (a right PITA if you don’t have checked bags to begin with), however if you’re in group 1 or 2 you should be able to resist the kind offer!

    @jimmyq
    – you may just be using shorthand, but for the avoidance of doubt, it’s not a “sealed bottle” you need but, as advised by others above, specifically a bottle sealed inside a STEB with the receipt evidencing the contents but also the bag – standard issue at most big duty free areas but possibly not smaller duty free shops that sell liquids in non compliant package sizes.

By way of confirmation- The transit went as advised and the Bottle (in the STEB) made it through!
GVA in general great for short break- Excellent free public transport including airport to town. GVA BA lounge great.

I had a bottle in a STEB and maybe I got that ass. But it made “secondary screenin”, they swabbed and the kindly told me that “on this occasion” he’d let it go. Whatever. I think it may also have coincided with a change in shifts so the process took a good 25 minutes.

ekposh -interesting. My STEB also got the swab treatment, although no silly comment. I didn’t bother to mention it as I had received the shoes off and rub down package! and therefore Assumed I’d just had the random ‘Pull’ as all my stuff in order- no bleeping etc. Maybe just coincidence!
