Forums Other Destination advice Hamburg – where to stay for football trip

  • 6 posts

Hi. I’ve managed to obtain 2 tickets to see St Pauli in Hamburg in February for myself and my Husband. I have sorted Avios flights but I wondered if anyone had any suggestions of the best areas/hotels to stay in -bearing in mind it is a football trip we don’t need anything fancy and we intend to enjoy the match and then explore the city in the next day. Thanks in advance for any ideas

For an easy life, something near the main railway station is your best bet. The metro from the airport will drop you here. It’s a small city anyway and whatever you want to visit will be walkable, but you’re not dragging bags around. It’s not like the UK – the station is literally at the top of the main shopping street so you’re not in some out of the way area.

Not sure about the cheaper options there to be honest – I usually took the Park Hyatt, Le Meridien or, for something different, the Reichshof (no longer a Hilton).

A reminder that this is Germany and literally everything bar restaurants and museums will be closed on Sunday. The railway station shopping mall is the only exception, which is why the mall is there!

Thanks Rob. Very useful advice especially on location and opening times. The match is on Sunday so that will be our main activity that day. We will probably do some exploring on Monday when things are open. Since the St Pauli Fanladen are only charging 14 Euros per person for Match tickets we may be able to stretch to reasonable hotel. Although I am always a bit self-conscious of being in a nice hotel after being a bit well refreshed with some lovely German Match day beers!

Hamburg is really easy to get around, the metro as rob says goes right from the airport to city centre.

Get day tickets from the machines I’m the subway or use the HVV app. The tickets work as unlimited travel for that day on all metro/ buses and water taxis.

Stay in the centre of Hamburg, the renaissance is nice and very central. Can be a bit more noisy than le meridian at the weekend, but le meridian is a bit further out and a bit further from any metro.

For the stadium, just jump on the yellow line and it takes you right to outside the stadium, or, if your in the centre, just walk to the bus stop opposite alsterhaus and get a 3 or x3 and it takes you to the stadium.

Remember, if your shopping, with the uk not being in the eu anymore, you can claim back vat on shopping in certain shops, you can even claim it back for cash in hand on the basement level in Auster Haus at the global blue office.
