Forums Payment cards American Express Handling of refunded transaction after BAPP downgrade

  • 1 post

I’ve had my 70k SUB and am close to hitting 10k to get 241 voucher, but my spending is likely to slow down a bit now (paid off some holiday balances to get this far). In the interests of downgrading ASAP, I’m considering making some transactions that might end up getting refunded somewhere down the line (buying refundable extras for a cruise that isn’t until 2025). So, a couple of questions:

    1) If I’ve downgraded to the free BA AMEX, will the refunded transaction still find it’s way to my card if it was paid on the BAPP? What would happen if I’d cancelled the free card in the meantime as well? And how would that work with taking the Avios off me for the refund value?

    2) Would the refund affect my 241 voucher? I’m guessing not, especially as the likelihood is the refund wouldn’t happen within the current spend year.

    Thanks.

Point 1 – can’t comment on a downgrade, but had same after I had upgraded from free to BAPP.
The card has the same number as the free card I had, so refund appeared as normal on the BAPP. The Avios clawed back were at the higher rate applicable to the BAPP rather than the rate for the free card. As my refund was only £25 or so, I didn’t challenge.

Have no interest in upgrading/downgrading. Nevertheless, I wondered if the arbitrage in points applied after downgrading too as could be significant for regrettable large purchases?
