@Aston100 Not sure about CP Osaka, but if there is a slightly larger convenience store with dining area you can buy a lot of breakfast items and coffee for much less than £12. I’d not pay more than £8 for hotel breakfast in Japan. At CP Kobe breakfast was £8 in November.

Flipping heck, that Kobe CP has got availability at 16.5k per night in early April – during my stay at the one in Osaka (which is now near enough 40k pn or £250 for the cheapest room).
    That’s peak season.
Is there a reason the Kobe CP is so cheap? Looks to be right next to the Shinkansen station so I guess it’s fine for getting to Osaka and Kyoto everyday for a week?
I’ll be buying the 5 day JR West tourist Railcard so no increase in transport costs if I do switch hotels.

It’s Kobe, not Osaka. I think you need to let @meta know that you can’t risk the wrath of Mrs Acton by dragging her outdoors at 8am every morning for coffee in a paper cup and a snack in a box…

Leaving aside the wrath of Mrs Acton, Mrs Ealing and Mrs West Ruislip, I’m now VERY tempted to switch part of my stay to the CP Kobe. There seems to be a mall next door and as said the station is like five minutes walk.
Luckily I booked my trip to that side of the island thusly: five nights at the CP Osaka; one night in Miyajima; two nights back at the CP Osaka as I’ve got opening day tickets to the Expo.
So, I reckon I might be able to switch those first five nights over to the CP Kobe, and do day trips to Kyoto and Osaka from there. Himeji is just a few minutes away on the train. It sounds very doable I think.
Will go check the details now.

Thanks Meta for indirectly altering me to this.

@Aston, I hope Mrs Aston isn’t reading this 🙂 Many moons ago I had the misfortune of repeatedly addressing my secretary’s husband by the wrong first name and he’d always turn to his wife and ask “who’s XXX Dear”?

You could do worse than stay Kobe but didn’t you already have a good deal at CP Osaka? Have you checked HI & Suites Shin Osaka?

Yeah I paid 22k per night for the CP Osaka (both the 5 night stay and the 2 night stay a couple of days later).
However, that hotel seems to be 10 minutes walk to the metro; the main Osaka station is a taxi ride away, and obviously the Shin Osaka Shinkansen station is even further.
Additionally the immediate area doesn’t seem to have any eateries as far as I can tell (I may well be wrong).
It doesn’t help when the hotel told me I’d need to pay about £8pp to use the indoor pool (not free for any guests apparently). I queried this with IHG customer services who confirmed it was correct.

So yeah, it’s not just about saving 5.5k points pn. The CP in Kobe seems better for access to local services and transport. I could be wrong as I’ve not spent long on this.
I intend to keep the 2 night stay at the CP in Osaka though.

    Actually sod that.
    I read the reviews.
The CP Kobe is in urgent need of a refurb and the mall next door sounds like it hasn’t recovered from Covid, or possibly Godzilla.

Sorry I wasn’t online for a few hours. I just wanted to say no. It’s really shit, but I suspect all CPs in Japan are terrible because they haven’t been refurbished. I stayed in three and all were dirt cheap. Good for mattress runs and breakfasts but everything else meh.

Kobe one is also only good if you need to be there otherwise it’s not close to any points of interest (apart from herb garden/ropeway).

    Thanks for the update Meta.
Will stick to the original plan.

Back to my original plan then.

@Tracy @meta I hired an electric-supported bicycle from near the station in Kyoto run by a young trendy Japanese girl – meetng her was part of the experience – and went everywhere on it. Quick and easy. I’ll absolutely do it when I go again as it was possible to just stop and go into interesting local places as well as between the sights. Pretty sure the bike hirer offered extra insurance at a very moderate cost which I took too.

That was after I’d been in the nice shops area in department type stores as that was just to and from the hotel then on foot was fine for those.

@LadyLondon can you remember the name of the company at all? The bikes sound like a great idea
