Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club How best to earn Avios when you have used all credit card deals?

  • 4 posts

    Hi,

What is the best way to continue to build up Avios balance once the main credit card deals are used? Over the years I’ve used Amex Gold, Amex Premium BA and Platinum and my husband has used all too. Just waiting on his Amex Gold 24 months to come round for him to qualify for the Welcome bonus on Platinum.

Also converting all of our nector points.

What does everyone else do? We have vouchers to use but very few points.

    Thanks!

    Barclays?

Then spend, plus make sure you take advantage of any offers/bonus points/e-store. When you use your BAPP to pay for BA flights & holidays you get 3 avios per £ instead of 1.5, and of course you earn avios on BA travel as well.

Avios Subscription, up to 200,000 Avios a year
Then use Balance Boost, up to the 300,000 Avios/year mark where it then becomes more expense thereafter

If you use these two options for both you and your husband, then that’s already 1 million Avios a year

I’ve boosted before when I’ve been near the amount I need. Is it good value? If so, that’ll be us sorted then. We have just taken out the Barclays card so that’ll give us a bit too.

You need to make sure you get better value than you paid for, of course. Rob has done a few articles entitled “What is an avios worth” and similar.

And bear in mind that the dreaded devaluation can happen at any time!

I think that when they do a bonus offer which can be up to 50%, i.e. an extra 100k Avios, this doesn’t count towards your annual limit. That’s 600k Avios per person right there, assuming you generate enough underlying Avios (100k) to be entitled to boost them by 300k, by which stage you’re up to 700k in total. That’s more than one person can realistically use in a year, unless they live a life of endless luxury long haul holidays.

Long term, cycle through the cards with a plan, between the two of you there are 8 credit card bonuses (2 nectar – this one needs more planning, 2 BAPP, 2 Plat, 2 barclays), depending on your spending level, you should be able to time your cards so that you are almost always working on a bonus or a voucher.
