Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club How much money and time spent to renew status?

  • 1,430 posts

I’m with you LadyLondon I dropped to Rust, sorry I mean Bronze, earlier this year and the only noticeable benefit I miss is choosing a seat for free at time of booking. Choosing seats 7 days out isn’t the worst either. Helps of course that I always fly in Club so get lounge access (where it is offered). I am doing a couple of BA Holidays to 80TP destinations so will get back to Silver anyway. But the holidays are the aim not the Silver status.

Hi @LL – it surprised me but I’ve had so much benefit from Silver I really don’t want to lose it! Being able to book Y/PE and still get myself plus 1 into a lounge, free seat selection, free baggage on AA short-haul flights, have all been incredibly useful so far. Going forward and planning (hoping!) to use QR more the benefits will still apply.

    Really interesting topic
I’m going to be 260 points short of keeping gold. But I don’t really have the time to take a 5 day holiday somewhere and double up with the BA holiday/car rental.

    Any suggestions ?

Book a holiday to Malta etc, collect the car and park it somewhere, fly back on another airline, fly back 4 days later, return car, return home on booked BA flight.

Even easier and possibly cheaper, do 4 domestic sectors with a hire car, drive the hire car back to your house or park it near one of the airports and get the train home for the intervening period. You can elect to return the car to a different point which might also be more convenient.

How much are you willing to spend? The easiest option is to fly CW return to JFK or go the other way and head to TLV or DXB.

That’s a really interesting idea, many thanks.

I’ve thought about doing this or as suggested a domestic fly run. Need to figure out how to add a hire car in there to double up the points.
Do i even need to drive the car – could i just leave it at the airport lot and just hand the keys back ?

What do the new updated offer Ts & Cs say about what must happen with the car?

LHR-HEL-Sweden/Norway/Denmark return with Finnair is available for around £600.
If all sectors are in Business that would net you 240TP, so still 20 short but might be useful.
ARN-HEL-LHR return a bit cheaper at £491, could position to/from ARN for the remaining 20TP. You should be able to pick A350 for LHR/HEL flights, and if you are Gold you also have Platinum Wing at HEL and Cathay First at LHR T3.

More info on the dedicated douple TP thread but you need to collect the car and check into the hotel (if booked)

IIRC the T&Cs actually say ‘use’

Not sure collecting and then just handing the keys back counts as ‘use’ though.

Thanks everyone for the useful info 🙂
I could just drive the car around the parking lot maybe 😉

@jml930, do you mean add it to the booking? Just use the “customise my trip” option and you can book whatever flights and car you want in the same package. To be on the safe side, I would at least drive the car away from the rental place!

The thing is that you need to drive it off the car hire parking lot and as such you need to find free or paid parking. If you hand back the the keys as you were originally suggesting, clearly the car hire hasn’t been used.

    You could do something like:

LHR – OSL (BA) 40 TP
    OSL – HEL – AGP (Finnair) 40 + 140 TP
AGP – LGW (BA) 40 TP

Total cost £667 and 260 tier points on certain dates.

The fares from Scandinavia to AGP (or vice-versa) involving the HEL – AGP flight are particularly good value.

You might need to build a couple of hotels into the itinerary though.

Hey all. I’m not looking for a “it’s not worth it” or “why would you bother” or “depends how often you fly”… And especially no “why keep flying with BA” type responses.

But for those that have done tier point runs, how much have you spent in time and cash to maintain/upgrade status?

    I’m genuinely looking at doing:
    LHR-MAN-LHR-SOF-LHR.
Over three days (can’t really justify any more annual leave to actually see Sofia properly).
Flights £400, plus about £200 for 2 nights hotels.

Have you watched Matts Planet? Some great detailed videos on this very subject. Disclosure. I’m a Patreon. I also did a Sofia trip in July. It was lovely. Do you have an Amex Plat by any chance? The hotel represents ridiculous value

I’ve not watched Matt’s Planet, no. Will check it out.

Alas, no Plat AMEX, and doesn’t look like Emyr has anything in Sofia either. Which hotel in particular offers value, do you think (or is this Plat-specific?)

FYI – I did hire a car on a recent trip to Spain for 5 days.
I only used the car for 1.5 days. Drove it back to the airport. Didn’t give the keys back until I returned for my home flight.
Nothing was said and no issues. (so far)

I plan to do a multicity business booking which will basically be LCY – EDN – EDN to City (same day) Then hire a car for 5 days – drive it home. Then drive it back after 5 nights stay, and do the same leg again. I will check this with BA directly. But as far as I can see. It gives me double points with a car hire and 40 + 40 x 2 = 160 plus another return flight = 80 (total 240 which is what i need). Should be able to do it for less than £800 and I’ll throw some airmiles at it to keep reduce the cost.
Of course. I do wonder if it’s worth the hassle of it all !!?? Gold for another year.

Never done a tier point run per se, but if/when I want to target at least BA Silver starting from scratch, I target around £1200 spend esp considering the double TP offer still available and ideally a trip I actually want to do.

We plan on 2 x 5d 80 double tp hols between august and dec 24.. Will try BUC and Malta. Definitely worth a visit both cities. And continue to enjoy silver til September 25, hopefully..
