Forums Payment cards American Express How to keep sign up bonus MR after cancelling AMEX card?

  • 56 posts

Hi, does anyone know that if I open an AMEX platinum and then cancel it (after I used up the sign up offer say in 2 months, the travel credit, dining credit, Harvey Nichols credit), how do I maintain the MR sign up points? Can I just keep a BA AMEX cobranded card, which doesn’t have a MR points based system. Or must I have an AMEX MR points based card say the basic blue card, in order to keep the MR points from the platinum sign up offer? Thanks.

You can either transfer the points into a partner currency (eg. avios) or get another MR card such as the ARCC. The disadvantage of the second route is it will not reset the clock for earning a new SUB on the Platinum card.

Thanks so much for your help. I am quite new to this game. So once I transferred to Avios, then the Avios stay with you indefinitely? And Avios is points for BA only? Thanks.

Avios drop after 3 years of inactivity, but you can reset the timer for example simply by making a purchase on the BA Amex card. But yes, once they are in your BA account, there is no way for Amex to claw them back.

Avios as a currency is used by BA, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Qatar. You can transfer them between the different schemes but it’s not essential as all carriers can be booked via BA online. You can also use them to redeem on oneworld partner airlines. Rob has a redemption guide here:
