Where is the £240 coming from? Isnt the new fee £290?

    1,227 posts

You’re correct so you’re about 3-4k Avios down instead for the same £390 spend.

It’s still not the end of the world

8k more spend in the first year would be breakeven for the same £390.

Churning the card becomes more attractive now potentially. Previously you got the bonus again with a 6 month gap I believe

    @rams
    – with HSBC, I wouldn’t necessarily count on being let back in repeatedly every six months and they don’t officially offer pro-rata refunds so there are probably better games in town for SUB suckers.

    Fair @JDB.

I’ve done it twice myself but with big gaps. That being said most likely will just keep it now as I don’t have another quality Mastercard/visa offering as appealing

The 1% cashback paid in Rewards (on amounts over £100) was mentioned on my letter but not on the webiste.

    @ross
could you clarify what was in your letter in relation to the above? I can’t see how the rewards points would ever add up to exactly 1% cashback but I might be missing something.

Hi I tried to post a link to a photo that I took of my letter, but it didn’t work it states:

“More reward points on your purchases – 3 for every £1

This means £1 spent on your card could give you 1.5 airline miles

Every £100 spent equals £1 in reward vouchers – the equivalent of 1% cashback

Plus, access complimentary Airport Security Fast Track”

Not sure what @rob thinks of the 1% comment as it does have benefit

Maybe @rob could check this one as it does change the card benefit.

    What’s confusing here?

You spend £500 on the card. You get 1,500 HSBC points. Those get you a £5 shopping voucher (if you don’t convert to Avios). That’s equivalent to 1% back.

ross misread it as additional cashback.

I know the card itself (without any PP registration) is sufficient for getting into lounges, was wondering if it’s the same for restaurant credit, has anyone used it like that or do they require to see some PP QR code?

When I used the credit in London City Airport earlier in the month both the shop and the restaurant wanted to scan the QR code in the PP app.

As expected, hsbc got the annual fee wrong
If your anniversary date is before fee change date and your statement date after, which is clearly incorrect.

I’ve a Premier card with them already and called to check if I upgrade via web or a phone call. Was advised web is only for new card customers, or existing would end up with a second card rather than upgrade. So I spent 45mins on the phone with a colleague who took me through the application, advising I’d receive a dig signature request by email shortly. 24h passed, no email, so I chat to CS and they tell me they can’t see the application but wait 48h. I call 24h later during business hours and a colleague tells me he could see my application but no status and to hang on till 48h have passed before receiving the email. 72h past and I chatted again via the app, now told to wait 7 days max. Finally a day later I call in to ask wtf is going on and a colleague tells me he can’t see my application, and wants me to redo it with him. Not only this, that upgrades can’t be signed by dig sig, it must be wet sig and posted back. So the timeframes; 5-7 days to receive the letter to sign, 3-7 days to receive and process, up to 12 days to receive the physical card. Essentially a month.

Please, if someone has ‘upgraded’, can you share your experience? As mine has been one of the worst customer experiences I’ve ever encountered, absolute shambles.

Why don’t you do the application online and potentially cancel the premier card after? Also if your current card is free, you could stick it in a drawer. With online application, you should have the card in 2-3 days.
As soon as you try something not standard, it does not work, hsbc very old style.

Perhaps the way to go, thanks. I had read on here that upgrades had been simple for others, hence the wild confusion over how this process could be so utterly painful.

The amount of incorrect advice given by 4 agents is unreal, naturally made a complaint as wasted a lot of time for nothing so far.

Update – I applied via the app and had a World Elite card in my digital wallet in less than 2 mins. Do not ask them to upgrade you!!! Thanks Nico – I just froze the old card via the app – which works fine as it has no points.

I did exactly that a year ago or so and was super easy, still have the premier card in a drawer somewhere.
I hear you on the time wasted, hsbc premier quality has gone down a lot.

Do the points get carried over to the new card you applied for (ie are the points accounts linked?)

    12 posts

Believe they are unlinked, unless you upgrade – which will cancel the premier/whatever card you have and move the points to the WE card. But dont advise that!

Whilst the initial move to Premier and the free credit card was a long and painful process, the upgrade to the WE was quick. The only thing they didn’t do was cancel the free card, so now I have both.

Points for both cards are pooled but you can see the balances of each. Annoyingly I had a refund back to the free card, so even after a couple of years, the point balance shows a negative number on that one!

Just called them. If you upgrade over the phone, the agents will only do pre-checks, they cant complete the application for you. You’ll get a form to sign via email (dig sig) or post (wet sig) to start their processing. So this form never reached me, and then I got a string of rubbish from agents afterwards, e.g. wait 48 hours, wait 7 days, yes I can see it, no i cant see it etc… Just apply via the app and save yourself the grief.

Well, did the eligibility check yesterday, firm no. Logged into the app to see a banner reminding me to apply for a CC, personal loan and some other stuff. Thought why not, 30 seconds later Premier World Elite approved with, no joke, the highest credit limit I’ve ever had from a UK card.

Hi all. I got the HSBC World Elite card in Feb 2024 so my anniversary will be in Feb 2025 and I’ve already met the £12k spend requirement to trigger the second bonus of 40k HSBC points. I know that my new annual fee will be £290 but does anyone know whether I will still get the 40k bonus in my second year, as I understand they don’t have this for new applicants now?
