My friends have just had the outward leg of a Tokyo trip cancelled for next April. The leg is MAD to Tokyo on Iberia. The booking was made via the BA site using a BA 241 voucher, with the return back to London on BA.
The alternative offered is to leave a day later which will obviously lose them a day of their holiday so they aren’t keen on that. Should they be speaking to BA or Iberia to find an acceptable solution?
Also how much flex do they have for finding an alternative? The only one world flights out of Madrid around their dates now seem to be Qatar code shares with significant layovers in Doha vs their original direct flight.
Sunday flight from Madrid appears to be cancelled in summer 2025 timetable. Now Monday,Thursday and Saturday.
The EU rights enforcement is against the operating carrier – Iberia – but with many months to go I’d start engaging with BA first. BA may be wiling to route MAD – LON – Tokyo via themselves or JAL for instance.
Plus MAD-FRA-HND or MAD-HEL/HND all with IB/JAL.
IB as the operating carier needs to provide that. They will argue no Avios availability but as they cancelled that’s no excuse.
If there isn’t Avios availability on your preferred options then BA will be quite restricted what they can do as they’re effectively your travel agent and need to follow the IB rebooking policy. However they’re usually happy to rebook onto their metal without Avios availability so MAD-LHR-TYO.
Agree that the EU261 responsibility falls to IB to provide a comparable rerouted but actually enforcing this in advance will likely be very difficult. BA may be able to liaise with them via the oneworld help desk but it’s unlikely they’ll get IB to get JL to open seats on their metal especially as the route isn’t cancelled entirely
Another option might be to shift dates on both legs to retain the same duration
