Firstly apologies, I recall there was a similar question to this asked recently but haven’t been able to find the thread.
We booked some Business class flights to Bogota from Madrid on Iberia for the Christmas period via the BA website using avios.
The BA website says seat selection only available at check in, but I am pretty sure that should’t be the case with these flights, however the Iberia app says I have to deal with the booking through BA.
Has anyone else experienced similar and how was it resolved? We are due to fly Christmas day so might be quite nice to spend the time with my partner rather than sat next to a stranger for the duration of the holiday.
Thanks again
If your BA booking confirmation details the Iberia booking reference, you may be able to go into the booking at Iberia.com
@Joe G – if you go into the Iberia app, you should be able to do this without any problem. You will also then usefully get more notifications about changes to your booking than BA offers. If this doesn’t work (although no reason why it shouldn’t) try another OW although for now not Finnair as it seems that for now the new sparrows have busted that.
Thanks for the response, I can find the booking on my Iberia plus app but it tells me the flight has been modified and won’t let me manage the booking (this was one of those changing the time by 30 mins modifications as I recall)
The exact error I get in the app reads
“Sorry, your reservation has been modified, it is not possible to resolve the incidence of of your flights, the purchase and Issuance of you flights has not been made on any of the Iberia Platforms. Please Carry out the management in the same place you made the purchase”
When I go to BA and try to manage the booking it just says seat reservation only available at check in. I phoned Iberia customer service but they weren’t very helpful. Have also emailed them.
Suppose my next steps would be to phone BA but I don’t have much confidence they have sorted. Perhaps another OW platform might work so will try that thanks.
Have you accepted changes? You won’t be able to do anything with the booking until you do.
@Joe G – the booking won’t just appear on your IB+ app because the booking will be linked to your BAEC number. You need to use the ‘find booking’ function and once you do, it will stay under ‘my trips’. As @meta says, if there are any unaccepted changes you won’t be able to do anything anywhere until your booking status is updated to HK and only BA can usually do that.
Taking JDB’s advice I also tried on the QR website and got the message
“There has been a change to one or more of your flights due to operational issues
Please review your new flight timings below and acknowledge the changes if they’re acceptable, or use our Live Chat service where one of our agents will assist you with other options.”
I got an email from Iberia notifying me of the modification to the flight but BA never emailed or asked me confirm (it was landing time 5 minutes earlier than originally stated), and there is nothing on their app or website asking me to do so when I look at the booking. I suppose maybe best speak to BA
Certainly looks like you need to confirm the changes before you can go ahead with the seat selection. Do you see the updated details in the BA MMB?
I phoned BA in the end, they managed to confirm the flight modification over the phone and seats now booked. Very odd that they didn’t email me asking to confirm the change and there was no option to do this on the app or website but glad it’s been resolved now
For future ref Royal Jordanian let you select free seats for Finnair and IB.
On a side note – does IB let you select seats for free in Business with Avios bookings or is it also a hefty fee like BA?

I didn’t pay a fee When I flew with Iberia in May.

Were you able to select your seat roughly at the 9/10 month prior to flying for free regardless of status? This thread was very helpful as I am considering using Avios on IB for flights in Biz.

I booked in January or so I think so was much closer to departure.

Ah, right. That’s fair – so they let you pick when you booked. Just asking because if so, I’m not going to bother with the status match with the Royal Jordanian thing altogether 😀
@Simey I didn’t have status when I booked seats on my IB reward flight for free. I booked via BA and couldn’t select seats on BA app/site but could on the IB app. Option appeared a couple of months after I booked. Flights aren’t until next May
@tootsci, remind me how you did this! I’m still having no joy and my Silver status expires tomorrow 😫
I did this a few months ago. Here’s the process as I remember it:
1) Log in to the BA website and find your booking
2) Attempt to select seats – at this point, it should show you the Iberia equivalent PNR for your booking
3) Take that PNR to the standalone ‘Manage my booking’ page on the Iberia website, and log in with it
4) You ‘should’ then be able to select seats
5) If this doesn’t work (which was oddly the case for two of my group), ring Iberia. I got through to their UK number in seconds, and they were able to arrange free seat selection for me over the phone using the PNR I gave@NorthernLass I think the circumstances under which I selected seats for my first set of flights are different to what you are trying, though the second is similar.
For my MAD-LIM and LIM-MAD-LHR flights these were IB reward flights in J that I booked on the BA website. I just entered the 6 digit booking reference from the BA confirmation email into the Iberia app under ‘My trips’, the flights were added, and then the ability to book the seats appeared a couple of months later in the Iberia app.
For my LGW-MAD IB Express flight which is a cash flight in J, I wasn’t sure if/when the seat booking would eventually have become available, but as a newly hatched RJ Gold Sparrow I entered my RJ FF number into the booking on the IB app and then I was able to book a seat. This was the booking with the 5 digit IB PNR that I referred to the other week. I had thought that I wouldn’t be able to add my RJ number into the booking on the IB app and would have to enter the PNR at RJ and select seats that way and so the 5 digits was a problem. But turned out it was fine.
I think I have read somewhere ?FlyerTalk that a BA FF number doesn’t seem to ‘stick’ in the MMB for IB but my RJ one did.
Sorry that doesn’t help!
Edit: I can’t remember how I added the RJ number into the IB booking, may have been on the website as have just checked the app and can’t seem to see an option for it there
@NorthernLass You can use the IB PNR 5 digit on IB to select the seats for free. Or on RJ site
https://www.rj.com/en/plan-and-book/before-you-fly/book-your-ticket?tab=5 with the 6 digit PNR provided by BA. Incredibly simple. Mine took around 10 months in advance before I could select seats on IB. I booked on Finnair today and was able to go on RJ site above to book seats for free (AY only allow middle block seat selection on J, so no window, whereas IB allow any seat in J to be picked) my fav is 5L. Good luck.
How did you get a 6 digit PNR from BA? My issue is that I only have 5 digit PNRs on my bookings, and neither BA nor RJ will recognise them. This is despite my having entered my BAEC number on the bookings.
I have a pathological distaste for calling airlines, it was stressful enough having to speak to BA this week to try and get my OCR for a cancelled flight recently!

If you only have 5 digit PNRs they are IB issued flights on 075 stock – have nothing to do with BA and will not show on BA or RJ.
You will need to use the IB App, IB Website or the virtual Whatsapp Agent on +34 676 67 60 04.
FWIW I don’t seem to have any issue with my IB issued flights but I don’t think I even added my BA number into them
Tried all that. WhatsApp bot said it couldn’t help me, website and app won’t let me select without paying.
