Have taken advantage of this and have 2 Intercontinental reward nights coming up – looking at the Ts&Cs should I look to spend 30 USD / night to qualify for the 20k points?

Won’t work like that. It has to be paid night.

I thought this would be the case. If they’re stipulating the stay has to be at IC/Kimpton/Regent they want you to spend more than $30. I don’t know how they came up with that figure, really.

IHG are claiming they have no record of my 2 x $200 payments taken in error but they were refunded at the weekend so I’ll leave it at that!

$30 is a generic IHG rule designed to stop you booking piles of nights at $10 hotels in Asia (heaven knows where but IHG thinks they exist) and qualifying for bonus or status too cheaply.

It does NOT mean spending $30 on a reward night changes the status of that night.

Thanks all, that’s useful to know

If using minimum Points + cash (max) would this treat as qualifying stay and can trigger the 20k points?

No. That’s treated as a rewards stay as you effectively buy the points with the cash element.

    Thanks for the clarification

Abandoned my plan to wait on a potential Black Friday offer and just took the plunge today as I booked Kimpton Clocktower in the annual sale today. Hopefully not to heavily discounted to be qualifying for the 20k. Signed up up via link on HFP article and the Diamond extension continues to work just fine, essentially instantaneous in my case.

@BJ – did you renew with cash or points? I’m still holding on for a Black Friday offer before I renew, as I don’t have any more IHG stays planned this year.

@Chas, I am new member so not a renewal. Paid cash. I don’t think I needed to be Ambassador before booking the stays to qualify for the 20k point so I could have continued to wait too. However, I am off soon for over a month and didn’t want to risk losing out as I usually take my eye of the ball a bit with loyalty whilst away. Good luck with yours, you’ll know quite soon now.

Is there a special page to go via for the Kimpton sale? I just checked for Blythswood Square and it’s now more than when I booked it a couple of months ago!

Thanks @BJ – I’m a lapsed member, so hoping it will still work for me, but just looking for all data points right now as the decision to use points or cash is finely balanced right now! Enjoy your travels.

@Anna, where hotels are participating (by no means all) I found the rates top of the pile on the app. They are flexible until day before too. I got Clocktower for two nights in January at £89/night.

Thanks @Chas. If it helps I think the last BF-specific Ambassador offer was way back in 2018.

That’s a really good rate for the Clocktower atm, @BJ! Enjoy your stay. I loved it both times but prices have gone so silly of late my last 2 Manchester stays were the (very nice) Indigo and the (great value, quite nice) Doubletree Piccadilly at much lower rates.
I’ll have a look on the app as well.

Some average reviews for Clocktower. Just 4 out of 5 on TA…

Hello! Seem to be having a brain fart this morning…the IHG offer of get 20k points when stay 2 nights for renewing amb…is that stays only at *Intercontinental* hotels or anything in IHG brand cos I booked a trip to a holiday inn and it’s in time frame req..please help a lady out. I’ve had coffee, I’ve done yoga and I still can’t work it out. As I took part in yesterdays free offer I am loathe to contact them and draw attn to my acc. Thanks!

@Swifty I think the 2 nights have to be at IC, Kimpton or Regent – Rob’s original article on the offer mentioned this as I recall.

@BBB – both my stays were during the pandemic when it had recently opened and they were very well staffed but quiet so maybe we just got spoiled because of that. Haven’t booked recently as prices have gone silly for Manchester city centre – in fact we are back at the Hilton Deansgate next weekend which is much better value atm due to the Amex £50 offer!

Took up the Ambasador offer after registering for the Diamond Elite offer the other day, instantly extended the Diamond Elite until Dec 2023

Did that thing where you upgrade to Ambassador at the desk on check-in. Was a two-stage booking: the client had booked nights 2 – 5, but forgotten to book night 1, so ask me to do it myself. I booked through Emyr, got a modest upgrade, then asked at check-in what my membership would get me. Well, I doubt they had a bigger suite with only one bedroom. Bigger than my two-bed flat in London, by some margin, was the suite I got.

Checked in Sunday, 20k landed overnight tonight. The second booking triggered it.

Thanks for the try-a-check-in blag tip whoever passed it on (@Rob?)

I’m going to start a new thread on what further to use the membership for.

Did you join Ambassador for the first time and it extended your Diamond elite status? Or were you rejoining? I ask because most of the anecdotes I’ve seen suggest that renewing extends you current IHG status, but not necessarily buying it for the first time.

    @BJ
have you been Ambassador before but let it lapse? Or is this a first ever sign up? If you’re a new member for the first time, I’m very optimistic about extending my partner’s Diamond in the near future….

My experience was I already had Diamond, had never had Ambassador, I have not got anywhere near qualifying for Diamond in 2022, but my app is showing Diamond through to the end of 2023 one day after paying the fee for Ambassador. According to the T&Cs, that should drop to Platinum in January, but I can’t imagine it will.
