Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Link oneworld flights (AA to BA) to connect airside

  • 5 posts

    Hello!

Does anybody have any experience in linking oneworld flights for easier connection? Specifically PHX to LAX with AA then onto LAX to LHR with BA. I know BA fly PHX to LHR but unfortunately this wasn’t initially my plan and BA flight is already booked.

I am looking to book flights with AA with a 1hr45 connection time at LAX. From what I’ve seen online, this should be enough time, providing luggage is passed to BA and we use the airside connecting tunnel. Would AA be able to do this for us at PHX check in? Or is there anything I’ve forgotten that could impact the connection? Many thanks in advance

    This can’t be done.

AA will not interline on separate tickets to BA and vice versa.

Unlike Delta/Virgin who will happily do it.

So I’d allow a min of 3 hours just as with any outbound international flight.

Also use something like airportia.com to check the on time performance of your flight. Some of those PHX-LAX ones can easily be 60-80 mins delayed.

    Thanks both for your responses.

I have managed to find the flight (and the one earlier) bookable via an OTA with a BA codeshare. If I were to book this – AA flight with BA code, do you think AA or BA would interline the flights in this case?

I should note that the LAX to LHR is a Avios rewards flight (I don’t know if that makes any difference)

No, not on seperate tickets. Rob documented it here https://www.headforpoints.com/2017/03/22/british-airways-luggage-policy/

You may get the AA check in agent to take pity on you but I doubt it.

The flight number makes no difference.

Who you bought it from makes no difference.

On separate tickets the policy is not to interline.

Sure on the day the AA agent may erroneously do it but you simply can’t rely on that happening so you should book your flights with the expectation that you’ll be collecting your bags and rechecking them again and with an appropriate time gap

And IMHO a 1 hr 45 min gap isn’t appropriate because you’ll need to have completed bag drop with BA no later than 60 mins before their flight leaving you only 45 mins to de board, collect from the carousel and get to BA desks. And that gives you no flexibility if your inbound is delayed even by a few minutes.

I know it’s the wrong place but, in case it helps anyone, we were able to get Aeromexico to check our bags through from from a domestic flight to BA for the London flight. It’s a bit of a schlep with bags from MEX T2 via the Aerotrén (or even within T1 which some AM flights now use) so this was a big plus.

Many overseas airlines “full service” are still happy to do it. The big exceptions are in oneworld IME – BA / AA / Qantas. I’ve also had Turkish @ LHR refuse to a non-TK (but Star alliance) flight.
