Hi all, as an Avios upgrade on a cash booking I paid:
48,000 Avios plus £1200 fees (return for 2 people from WT+ upgrade to club world).
This seems to cheap for an upgrade?
Not that i’m complaining, bit I can’t get anywhere near that when i try to price it up on the BA site.
Just wondering if the person on the phone may of made a mistake?
It’s not correct. Way too cheap. You’re looking at 30-37.5k pp one way plus fees.
I phoned recently to enquire about upgrading a WTP booking LHR-JFK to CW, I was quoted (if memory serves) 30k Avios and £315 in fees.
So I’d agree – the Avios amount seems low and the fees potentially seem a bit high.
RFS fee is £175 in PE and £225 in CW, so shouldn’t the charge to upgrade be the difference? Though I suppose it might be different if you had originally chosen another avios/cash option.
I can’t say I have any experience of this, but because it’s an upgrade of a cash flight, they are still using the pre-RFS avios rates?
I recall that PE to NYC used to be 26k avios, and CW was 50k. Which is maybe where the 48k avios figure is coming from?
I remember someone had a similar query about upgrading a flight to DXB.
That would make sense if the upgrade was for 1 return journey or 2 x 1 way – but OP said it was return for 2 pax 🤷♀️

True. I wonder if the OP meant the inbound flight only.
Possibly, though £1200 extra cash is a shocker if so!
Yeah £600 plus 24k avios per person on top of whatever the WT+ cash ticket cost seems high.
Did a one way upgrade for my wife and her mum last year to Chicago and it was just over £100 each plus the avios. Is this due to the RFS changes?

This is BA it isn’t that simple!!
To calculate the cash difference on a cash booking you are upgrading using Avios you should
1) get your eticket receipt from finnair manage my booking and find the tax and YQ figures
2) price up the booking for cash today in the new classes. Can do this on ba.com or ITA matrix
3) deduct the tax and YQ figures 1) from 2)
That’s what you should pay. Around £300 pp each way I paid last time
The difference in Avios I believe is supposed to be the Avios ticket “mid points” but I’ve been charged the highest difference couple of times recently – 30k sounds right off peak pp one way
I didn’t spot it was a cash booking!
So one person says it’s not correct, too cheap, another says it sounds high, and a third who details how it’s calculated says it sounds right. What an authoritative reference for the uninitiated this site is.

No. If you take the time to read it correctly, most people are agreeing it seems like too few miles and too much money. Different things.
Hey guys – thanks for all of the input, really interesting. Just to confirm – yes this was a return trip for 2 on a cash (BA holidays booking in the BA Sale) booking.
Just for more context, cash paid was £1697, that was for 3 nights in a top hotel and WT+ seats return for 2.

So yeah that makes sense then, 2 of use 300pp each way adds up to the total we paid, 1200. Just the Avois that might be too low then?

You’ve paid £800 for WT+ return flights and 3 nights in a top hotel in NYC? That also sound very cheap!!

Yeah, it was actually cheaper £590 before the WT+ upgrade was selected during booking. Pretty happy with BA Holidays sale.
