Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Low tax redemptions using BA companion voucher

Sorry if this has been covered already but does anyone know if the above is possible? I am aware of low tax redemptions via various options but is it possible to do these whilst using a BA companion voucher?

You’re limited to whatever’s available on BA, IB and EI – there are a few destinations like (at least used to be) GIG, HKG, SIN (?? do your own research though!) where the “taxes” are lower than BA’s RFS fees but there aren’t many any more.

IB generally has lower tax options from MAD, however you can only use the voucher on ba.com so you have to pay what BA charges.

For really low tax options, I’d look to AA on US domestic or outbound Caribbean routes, you can’t use the voucher but you’re looking at $6 per sector cash.

Is it not a case though that you have to book via the BA website to use the voucher and therefore by default you are stung for charges? Or are the low tax redemptions available on BA website?

That’s what I said. You can use the voucher via BA, or book with other airlines and pay lower surcharges.

You can book some routes, e.g. on AA or QR on the BA website and pay their low taxes, but you can’t use the voucher.

BA surcharges aren’t actually that horrendous if, say, you’re booking a CW route where cash prices are very high. 180k avios plus £900 for 2 business class seats to Barbados or Maldives is a pretty good deal, especially at peak travel time.

Or are the low tax redemptions available on BA website?

They are indeed, but you cannot start in the UK. So, for instance, IB MAD-LIM-MAD would come to, off peak, 85,000 Avios + £ 416.80 on the highest Avios + lowest cash combination, including the voucher.

Does anyone know if you can mix and match metal using the voucher? E.g : MAD-GIG on IB, then GIG-LHR on BA ?

I know it’s not possible online but via the phone?

Yes – again there’s plenty of advice on doing this in the dedicated threads.

The “adding the return to the 241” thread is a long read but covers all this, also see, e.g., “using the 241 on Iberia.”
