Forums Hotel loyalty schemes Other hotel schemes Melia options at Costa del Sol

Have actually never been to the Costa del Sol before so looking to go this summer with wife and 4 year old. Thinking it could be a good opportunity to use one of those 20% vouchers that you get with Amex Platinum.

Has anyone any experience in staying at either the Melia there or the other Sol or affiliated properties near Malaga?

I have stayed there! The hotel is fine but a bit too much brits abroad / holiday camp vibes for me. I am probably a snob though. The level is a worthwhile upgrade at that hotel though. I would not recommend the half board / dinner there and not have high expectations for breakfast.

The other hotels around there are mainly sol’s right? Which should be lower standard really.

There is a Gran Melia Don Pepe nearby in Marbella. Some of the rooms need refurbished (artex being an unusual feature) but food and RedLevel lounge and setting etc are excellent. I’d stay there happily at their old/historic/normal rates which might be £200-£300 in holidays. But demand is still a bit mental there and when priced at £400+ I think it’s too much.

We’ve stayed in the Melia Costa Del Sol before. Very nice, and worth paying extra for the Level rooms. We’d love to go back soon.

Wasn’t hugely impressed with Ocean House by Melia. Rooms were fairly basic – 3* standard. Breakfast was poor, food in general wasn’t great. The Play:Bar was nice and the rooftop adults-only pool was relaxing but service was poor – you’d be lucky to see the waiter once every 20 minutes.

Thanks for the responses. There seems to be a consistent theme when I hear about Melia resorts with regards to the quality of the food.

I’ve actually never stayed at any beach resort before but given I have a young child I feel like it may be time to at least give one a try.

    Will continue my investigation.

Have you looked at Kempinski Hotel Bahía?

@nike85 I have not. I’m definitely blinkered by the 20% off Melia offer which is probably not the optimal way to plan a holiday. Will check it out though as I’ve seen Kempinski Hotels mentioned when looking at best options in the area.
