Forums Other Housekeeping Minor thing — keep me logged in

Very minor thing — the keep me logged in button, er, doesn’t. I mean, it keeps you logged in for a while, but eventually, regardless of activity on the browser or device, forgets your credentials.

I suspect the authentication cookies just get set with a fixed life and not refreshed when you re-visit. This is a minuscule inconvenience for those of us with decent password managers, but many people don’t, and will give up when faced with a password remember/reset effort. Also likely affects tracking of visitors/engaged users for HfP stats for anyone who doesn’t comment regularly.

Can’t remember what it is set at. However there is some logic for us. The system does not cache data for logged in users so the server drain is far higher than for anyone else, where images are served by Cloudflare and do not touch our systems.

Wow — you do indeed serve images from the root http://www.headforpoints.com domain!

You could ask your web dev to move static content to a dedicated cookieless static domain — eg something like shfp.uk (short names are better) — and give the assets long expiry times. Might improve the performance on your server(s), and enable you to offload that domain to a cache of your own, and/or Cloudflare/Cloudfront/Akamai. I’m no WordPress expert — that idea may require a plugin or imaginative coding — but it is definitely worthwhile if you have non-trivial amounts of visitors.

An alternative approach for a performance boost is take the small but critical items of css/js and consider inlining them. Again, I have no idea how to do this in WordPress, and a cookieless static domain might just be easier, and probably quick enough.

I think the argument for a decent length cookie is still there. The fact your server is misconfigured for logged in users is a separate issue.

I was just going to say… I crafted a long-ish question on the train, got home, made a couple of tweaks and when to submit but nothing. D’oh – i’ve been logged out.

Irritating that there’s no fallback to at least preserve my question so I can log in and repost…

It feels like the period between login requirements is decreasing.
Which is not a good thing.
