I got the Platinum last Jan right at the end of the 100K SUB offer. It was 75K initial SUB and then 25K in month 15 of the card. So basically encouraging you to keep the card more than a year.
My wife is eligible for the current Platinum SUB. But we can’t justify 2 Platinums totalling £1,300 a year.
So our thinking is to get her the Platinum in December, make use of second half of 2024 benefits and hit the £10K spend to trigger the 80K MRs by about month 5. We would then keep her card (we were planning on keeping mine but that SUB is too good to pass up)
In the meantime, keep mine until month 15, get the 25K bonus and then cancel. £650 for 25K MRs is a bad deal so I’m really relying on the pro rata refund dropping this cost to £162.50 for those MRs.
Best I can tell doing this is all within the terms an conditions even if Amex would probably prefer we didn’t
If they decide to finally enact the “no pro rata refund” policy then I’m going to feel pretty stupid. Would you risk it? Thoughts? Anyone else in a similar boat?
I am happy to forgo the 25K extra so really this is me trying to rinse the most amount of MRs out of card.
Similar situation here; our currently active Platinum is in my wife’s name, and membership only just renewed, so we have had the £650 annual fee charged.
My 2 year eligibility is up, with perfect timing, so I can apply for a new card, and get the SUB.
Tip for you, if you have not checked it out yet. If my wife refers me, she obviously gets the referral points, but my sign up bonus goes from 80K to 100K !!
We plan to keep her card until mid April, as we have paid for a holiday on it, and want the travel insurance cover, plus will use the harvey nichols and UK restaurant benefits. But then plan to cancel hers for a pro rata refund. Rob has suggested that Amex would need to give ample advance warning of the change to pro rata refund policy.
Good to hear I’m not the only one weighing this up.

That’s an excellent tip, will check it out.
I’ve just whipped up a spreadsheet to plan out the benefits and cost and even if the pro rata goes away we still come out well ahead if we get her’s this year, less so if we get it in Jan. I just don’t want to pay full cost of 2 Platinums 😆
