Any recommends for lunch in Berlin? Have had a quick look at Tim’s list and compared on Trip Advisor and can’t say I’m excited!

I used mine in April at Block House near the zoo. Good steak, acceptable sides. Would I recommend? Well, I wouldn’t not recommend, but it wasn’t terrific unless all you want is meat and wine.

I’m not sure why you would rely on Tripadvisor to choose anything; it ceased to be of any added value some years ago. It’s full of fake or exaggeratedly untrue reviews and too many reviewers appear to know so little about food that they can barely differentiate between a banana and a baked potato. They also easily fall for theatre rather than content as intended by restaurants. The Michelin guide is just so much more reliable and the ‘bib’ or ‘plate’ entries, focussed on food but also value for money, are just so much more reliable when travelling to places around the UK or abroad where one doesn’t know where to go. Recent trips to Nottingham, Lichfield and York all yielded exceptional results and in Copenhagen and Stockholm, seven out of seven hits.

@marshy11 I replied to your same query on the daily chat thread, but just wanted to echo JDB about the Michelin ‘bib’ entries. I forgot to mention that the Brasserie Colette restaurant I recommended (which although isn’t included in the Amex plat offer is also by Tim Raue, whose Restaurant Tim Raue is included) is actually a Michelin Bin Gourmand. It’s certainly worth a visit on its own merit even though you can’t use the dining credit there.

Thanks both. @JDB I don’t rely on TA but there is very little in the Guide for restaurants on the Amex offer and I was hoping for personal recommends. @ExpatinBerlin thanks for Colette, looks very interesting as does the offer inclusive Tim Raue.

    @phantomchickenz
I saw quite of few of the Block on the offer and decided it was going to be exactly as you described. We are only in Berlin for four days and this will be the last chance to use the non UK offer but we would prefer to eat well than eat free! If we can get both, then so much the better!

I used Block House in Berlin earlier in the week, the Friedrichstrasse one. I’ll make no claims to be a foodie but the steak was really good. The sides were fine.

Was at block house Berlin last month and as a vegetarian I couldn’t touch their “plant based” veggie burger, so had to make do with the fries and cola!

    The dessert was good though

Maybe the Block would be ok for a lunch. We are staying at the Melia so that one will be close.

Completely forgot I also went to Le Petit Royale. Very impressed with service (a booking was needed), and food was very good too.

I use the block house in Hamburg regularly, there’s a lot of them in the city, they also own Jim block, which is like a five guys.

I tend to use the block house at Jungfernstieg as it’s a nice view into the aster.

It’s not the fanciest steak house by any means, but for the price it’s good, even when I can’t get the dining credit as it’s used up for the year, I still go.

Alex is a decent chain in Germany for like 12€ burgers, its like Ivy except not overpriced and actually nice 🙂

Unfortunately the Alex in Hamburg always seems to be full when I try to go, one day I’ll get in.

I indeed had nice breakfast and lunches across three major cities.
Couldn’t fault ALEX for the food quality and service.

I am sure this has been asked before. I even tried looking for an answer in this thread but couldn’t find a definitive answer. Hence asking again, apologies for a repetitive question.

Is there a restaurant where the overseas credit can be used by purchasing gift cards online?

Quick question re the LA restaurants. Can I buy a gift card or does it have to be dine in only. Margot LA was our preference but it’s closed during our stay 🙁

Attending a show at Windsor in a few weeks was going to book pre show dinner at the ivy Windsor but doesn’t seem to be included in amex dining credits offer. I guess I had wrongly assumed all ivy’s were participating

There is the Loch and the Tyne but does not have availability.

I still have the 150 uk credit to burn through so must get planning

Any restaurant recommendations for using this offer in Munich? TIA.

You could buy a gift voucher from another Ivy if there’s one convenient for you, and use it at Windsor.

Thank you for that piece of wisdom that’s exactly what I’ll do 🙂

Any recommendations for a Saturday lunch in London please somewhere with great service? For two meat and fish eaters but one with a shellfish allergy (went to Yauatcha City in Broadgate Circus as a first meal out post-Covid and unfortunately the only thing on the menu they could guarantee as completely safe was the sweet and sour pork – won’t make that mistake again!) Have been to Hawksmoor and the Ivy many times so keen for something new. Fancied Mere as they have a new lunch menu that’s competitively priced but unfortunately the recent reviews aren’t great!

I think Gymkhana is on the Plat. list if you like Indian? Nice set lunch.

I haven’t tried the Mere lunch menu and probably never will. Normal menu OK, but like the restaurant itself not particularly memorable.

Thanks @Michael_C and @QwertyKnowsBest, we’re big fans of Indian food so I’m deliberating between Gymkhana and Brigadiers, glad to hear that I’m not missing out at Mere!

I think Gymkhana hands down between the 2. But even more so on a Saturday lunch, when the whole Brigadiers area will feel particularly sterile and empty.

I was quite surprised to see these dismissive comments re Mere. We go to Mere quite regularly and while the dining room is nothing to write home about, the food is consistently excellent – taste, technique and presentation.

The service is always good and the wine list is both unusual and reasonable. I don’t pay attention to reviews – the negative ones usually seem to have some sort of undisclosed gripe and/or clues as to their reliability. The worst review in recent months is by someone who has only ever posted one review. The other bad ones are clearly from the same party and use the same phraseology none of which shows much understanding of food.

Why do people use these reviews that are so obviously not reflective of the place?!

Mere is one of the few beacons of light on the Plat list for London. The lunch menu isn’t new, it’s just that they stopped having it for a while.

I’d agree with you about Mere @JDB. We’ve had several great experiences at Mere. I wouldn’t dismiss the place.
