Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club New to Virgin Reward+ – worth for solo traveller?

    Hi all,

I have someone who is thinking about applying for the Virgin Atlantic Reward+ credit card. If they just about spend enough to trigger the voucher, where would this typically take them?
Would the card fee be justifiable, or is this suited for very high spenders. Can the voucher be used to half the point requirement on a redemption ticket as they are solo traveller? They are considering making the switch from Amex as they are still finding many retailers where they shop still refuse to take Amex.

How the Virgin voucher operates is described in one of today’s news stories –

For a solo traveller, the voucher could be used to upgrade a return trip (points or cash). The issue might be earning enough points to make it worthwhile if they’re not planning on spending a lot on the card. It is useful for spending in Europe, though, with no FX fees.

Because the voucher can be used to upgrade a cash ticket, one would not need to be a high spender on the card – as one could simply chase the £10K spend for the voucher rather than chase points.

However, as with most cases of people who are wavering who come to HfP for advice on whether to jump in, they have to absolutely be reminded that one only gets out of such vouchers as much effort as one puts in. Northernlass above is a savvy and active reward seat hunter and knowd her maths on calculating value for money from such vouchers. If this person thinking of taking out the card thinks it is going to be a case of getting the voucher then naming their date and time to fly to say LA, then they need to be disabused of that notion.

High praise indeed, @BWS! Though it’s taken me the best part of 3 years to start achieving the level of value I want with VS, and they’ve just cancelled the route I’m booked on 🤦‍♀️😂
