Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club One way reward seats higher taxes?

    Hi,
I’m looking to book for next summer to MIA for 3 weeks using points, but as there are 5 of us I’m worried about reward seats selling out as it’s peak travel time. I can be flixobke with a day or so for coming back but no more than that due to work etc. I’ve been looking at booking the outward journey when it becomes available and same for the return journey. I’ve done a dummy booking and it looks like the taxes etc work out higher when booking each leg seperately, is this correct?

Yes – Booking two one way flights will cost more in taxes

The taxes are only higher if you book two one ways. Instead, book your outbound and – so long as you call before your outbound departs – then the agent can add the return sector to the original PNR and send it off for recalculation. This should result in the same taxes as a return. Not all agents are clued up on this, so you may have to try to get one who is.

Hi @AL Does this mean you book the inbound and pay the higher taxes and then ask for re-calc …. OR they do the re-cal before you pay for the inbound?

The taxes are identical, however you book, what is higher is the airline imposed charges.

I was just being particular about language really – taxes are imposed by authorities and don’t differentiate between one way or return tickets – the vast majority of the cash element you are referring to is not taxes at all, but in fact airline imposed charges.

You are, indeed, correct to pull me up on that, @Andrew J. I usually say TFS but sometimes old habits die hard!
