I currently hold:
– a Virgin Atlantic Rewards+ MasterCard (VS being my preferred airline and a useful back-up for when AmEx isn’t accepted)
– a BAPP (because CV and as my second choice airline)
– an AmEx Gold card (my original card, based on the idea that I prefer MR than tying in to a scheme)
– a Barclaycard Avios card (for the SUB and voucher, then downgraded from the Avios Plus card as soon as I’d got my voucher)A large chunk of my expenditure comes from expenses, which means that getting SUBs is straightforward as I usually have no qualms about meeting targets without pre-planned big purchases. I am tempted to get rid of the AmEx Gold card to increase spending across my BAPP and VS cards, but would downgrade the account to Green to keep the MR account active without having to transfer it to a scheme. This would also reduce my outgoings on card fees by £160/year. I also value the VS and BAPP for the CVs, even though I do need to work out what to spend them on faster before than they expire!
I am in two minds, though – although not for particular reason. I am open to enquiring minds providing opinions on the approach and any gotchas or things I’ve not thought about would be appreciated.

You don’t say what your aim is though (e.g. more avios, hotel points, etc). Holding the BAPP will exclude you from most SUBs – you’ll need to cancel your gold then wait 2 years to be able to get a SUB on the Platinum but that’s about it as far as Amexes go.

I don’t have a particular aim, other than that I think that I should start to rationalise a little. It sounds like downgrading my Gold to Green will probably do that for me.
What is the advantage of the green card over the ARCC?
If many of your expenses are incurred abroad, the PRG gives you 2MR/£1 plus the bonus at £5k thresholds (plus usually other bonuses), assuming your employer picks up the FX fee as most do. When used for foreign spend or non BA airline spend, the overall earning rate is the best of any UK card. There is also the Deliveroo benefit that covers most of the fee and I find it has the best offers vs other Amex cards.

Green comes with an additional years warranty after the manufacturer’s warranty ends on items purchased with it, such as TV’s, washing machines, fridge freezers, hoovers, mobile phones etc. God knows how he/she plans to downgrade from a credit card to a charge card and the Green card closed to new applicants last year. It would’ve also made a saving of £100 pa because the Green card yearly subscription is £60.
