Forums Payment cards American Express Platinum dining credit credit not showing on statement

  • 56 posts

Previously when I’ve used the £150 dining credit, it’s instantly been applied to my statement. However, when I used the July-December dining credit at the Ivy, it didn’t show up until I called three months later. I’ve just used the dining credit again, and again it hasn’t been deducted from the statement – even though I received the email confirming I’d just used the offer. Is anyone else having this problem?

Yes, I’ve also been waiting since 3rd Feb. Used it at Bread St Kitchen, where it also had the 10% dine deliciously offer, but neither have been credited yet. Didn’t receive the email thanking me for redeeming the offer. Previously, I’ve received the email by the time I’ve left the restaurant, and the credit arrived a few days later. Checked with Amex chat, and they said the transaction was valid for both offers, so will just have to wait the full 150/90 days before chasing again.

I’ve been waiting for mine to show up since 31 January. Wondering if they will delay until after they stop doing the refund card charge option? What would happen if I cancel card before it pays out I wonder – probably lose the benefit?

29 January Som Saa – no credit / emailed received
30 January Duck and waffle – credited 3 days after/ emailed received
1 Feb Berenjak – credited few days after / no email
    6 Feb – Hawksmoor – no credit/ email received

Completely random and I am guessing there is no rush on AMEX’s part to credit given the upcoming fee refund deadline

Yup you would lose the benefit

For me the T&C are very clear. Penultimate paragraph of the Dining Credit T&C. https://www.americanexpress.com/en-gb/benefits/diningbenefit/Terms-and-Conditions-GB.pdf

If we withdraw this benefit or your account is closed, and you’ve earned a statement credit which has not yet been added to your account, we’ll add this to your balance unless your account was suspended before closure or we have the right to reverse a statement credit as explained above

The idea from some posters above and on other threads that Amex is somehow deliberately delaying dining or HN credits until after the end of pro-rata fee refunds is rather ridiculous given that the terms explicitly say you will get them if you cancel, Amex IT anyway couldn’t cope with this – credits turn up when they turn up without manual intervention and these credits really are quite small in the context of Amex.

They clearly aren’t too bothered about the odd £50 or £150 here or there when they are currently showering people with £500-£750 retention bonuses for their long term loyalty of four to five months. They may be hopelessly incompetent and their UK business strategy may be floundering, but they aren’t trying to cheat anyone.

    Apologies if this posts twice.

The T&C are very clear as I posted previously.

I chatted with Amex yesterday and they confirmed that the benefit will be lost if card cancelled before credit added. I also asked about cancelling and retention bonus and was offered nothing other than Gold card option. Whether the delay in crediting is intentional or simply down to inefficient handling doesn’t matter to me – I just want the credit due paid before I cancel.

Well, if you wait the full 90/150 days, that may cost you more in annual fee at £48/month (based on the old price) than you are going to get in credit and you may inadvertently go past the end of pro-rata refunds. The terms spell out that you get to keep the credit even if you cancel and you should rely on those rather than anything spouted by any Amex agent.

The concept of marginal cost must be made mandatory reading at schools.
Similar situation with another poster on the retentions thread insisting the date of annual fee is important; probably doesn’t understand the pro rata refund.

This is what I was advised and it looks like credit would be lost

Pointless chatting with Amex staff when the T&C are clear. You WILL get the statement credit if you cancel. You can’t force the 150 days – if you sit it out then it will cost you more than the credit.

Log into your Platinum and go to the benefits. On the global dining are the specific T&C you need.

If Amex has conflicting terms as it has here, the more favourable one should be applied. They might attempt to argue that the general offer terms govern all offers but given the dining offer rules post date the general rules they will struggle with that and if they attempted to apply their general discretion to void an offer or not pay, they would get short shrift.

Amex really doesn’t have a clue, telephone and chat staff will tell cardholders entirely opposing things or three different things on the same day, the rules are a mess as demonstrated here. I hope they get a stampede of cancellations to wake them up from their complacency but fortunately for the cardholder they pay huge retentions to cover it up.

Not according to the terms and conditions.

Yes it was me that quoted it. The T&C on the dining credit are very simple.

Just talking to Amex on chat and they confirm as below.

I have gone through the link shared by you above and I would like to inform you that you will receive the offer credit even if you cancel the card account.

    Thanks for your help

I hope you have charged Amex a fee for training their staff! The dining and HN credits are such a fundamental part of the Plat offering that they really ought to be familiar with the rules which also aren’t very complicated.

Very enlightening thread, need to see how this pro rata refund plays out now 😃

This forum is invaluable! I have also been advised by an agent that my credit wouldn’t be posted if I cancelled or downgraded the card, but I just challenged them using the link shared above and here is what I got:

Thank you for staying connected. I can confirm that the transactions made this month are eligible for the local dining benefit reward, and shall be credited within the timeframe previously stated. I’d also like to correct the information provided by the previous representative as you do have the right claim – you will still receive the credit after the card is cancelled since the transactions are eligible per the benefit’s terms.

We apologize for the confusion, and we’ll make sure to have a feedback sent to the right team.

They also confirmed that it will be the case whether I downgrade or cancel the card before the credit posted.

Have just received my Platinum dining credit 3 weeks after my spend. Now planning to cancel card. Asked about retention bonus but nothing available.

Mine showed up too, two weeks plus after the actual spend.
No, HN credit though which was used on the same day though.

A data point – or more proof that the t&c are correct –

Used the dining credit at 20 Jan at the Ivy.

Had planned on cancelling the card due to no longer using the insurance and dining credit being fairly useless here in Cornwall. Called up to cancel – no incentive offered – asked about the dining credit £150 being credited and how I would accept it (ie could I still view the cancelled account) was initially told by two agents (foreign then Brighton) that it would die with the card. I told them both they were wrong and to read the T&C.

    Cancelled the card 17th February.

Received a refund on membership fees to the card on 18 February.

Withdrew that via live chat on 19 February.

Then 20 February the dining credit appears on the cancelled card.

Went onto live chat and moved the credit to my bank which is now pending on my bank.

I hope this clears up the cancelling versus not receiving the credit question.

That’s good for the Dining and HN ones then as the normal cashback offers you’re told you would no longer get them tbh I’ve never not had a statement credit before I closed an account so no experience of if its true or not for other cashback offers.

Can someone please post the link to HN terms?
Gone with cancellation but as usual Amex CS saying the HN offer credit will not work once card is cancelled!
