@BBbetter I’ll be cancelling if they do.

@bbbetter In my opinion these benefits changes would be terrible.

For the annual fee, in my opinion Platinum is already a terrible product, so if they made it more terrible it would not really surprise me.

Just had my membership fee charged, went on chat but no retention offer as I was given one (35k) ten months ago. I will wait a couple of months until it’s over 1 year and try again, but will definitely be cancelling if I don’t get one as the fee without the annual retention bonus is bad value for me.

I think a huge number would cancel if they removed the dining credit.
I have already used mine for this year (UK), I will need to know by August, as otherwise I will cancel.
Heathrow parking, fast track, Starbucks etc won’t work as a substitute, too niche.
    Restaurants will always work.
My feeling is they will continue it.

Interesting that the Centurion card doesn’t have the dining credit.

Curious to know if they will be renewing the dining credit, I assume they will.

They should increase it to £200 + £200!

Can’t see them going that high. I’d guess £175 each at most, which is an increase of 16.5%.

Has anyone tried to upgrade from Gold to Platinum just to see if they get a bigger retention bonus before finally cancelling to reset the whole 24m cycle?

Currently being offered 12k for £1k spend on Amex gold credit card which isn’t a lot so wondering if I should try my luck

Got the same 12K offer as you and then upgraded to Platinum a week later. I’m also curious what I’ll get because I don’t think I can make much use out of it from the second year onwards.

In reality, I think it’s just a gamble if I’ll get anything, as usual. I also think the retention offer will be higher and be from the Platinum’s standpoint. Upgrading and then asking for a retention offer straight away will probably not work.

I tried to cancel my platinum card today. My membership year ends mid June. So, the pro-rata refund was around £50.

However, I was offered 35K MR points today so have accepted these for now.

I believe I can still cancel once the points are credited?

I plan request my cancellation after a week or so (before mid May). Not sure if I should wait any further and Not sure if Amex will claw back these 35K MR points if I try to cancel after 1 week of retention offer.

Given 35k a few days ago, renewal is this month.

Just called to cancel my Amex PErsonal Platinum taken out in October 2023. Was actually keen on cancelling the card as I did not see any reason to keep it after using the dining benefits. However, was persuaded to delay cancellation by offer of 50000 points.

Suggestion: when posting retention offer, could we maybe also add the spend we’re putting on the plat card? Even ranges could be helpful to see if there’s any correlation between the offer amount and past spend.

I’m personally curious as I hold both BAPP and Plat, but I channel all my spend onto the BAPP.

My spend was £5000 in October/November to trigger the signing bonus and nothing after that till i used the dining credit; domestic and international in April/May. So limited spend.

Got a 50K offer on Plat so I intend to use it as a statement credit against the fee – which is the only reason I would have cancelled; it’s currently too high for the benefits it confers. Reducing it by 50K points about breaks even for the services I use. I’ll go again for another year and make another decision then. I currently put around £20K per year through the card, but if they dropped the overseas charge – I’d put a lot more through – so are they shooting themselves in the foot by imposing this fee?

I had the knock back last night on chat, just short of 12 months since my last bonus though so I will wait a couple of weeks and try again.

I’m still waiting to see if they will extend the dining credit, I’ve already used it for this calendar year, so need to make sure it will be there next year before renewing.

I have just been offered 35,000 MR points via web chat. I’ll call for a better offer. I normally put my spending through my BAPP and my platinum card only gets used to trigger offers and dining credit.

Let us know if this works – I was under the impression that offers via chat and phone are the same as they’re determined by some algorithm.

My First year Platinum renewal date today. 35,000 MP offered very straightforward. Don’t really benefit too much from this card but will keep for that retention offer.

Just tried to cancel my partners personal platinum. Turns out if you cancel a charge card you dont get the gold card for free only at £195 fee and the green card is also not free and is with a £60 fee. So opted for the green card till i use up the points in the account.

Amex Plat for 19+ years, web chat saying I was going to cancel, offered Amex Green for £60 or just cancel and walk away. No retention offer. No update on any offers carrying on. I asked if they were interested in offering a retention offer and they said there were none. Maybe it’s time for a 2 year reset and move to Barclaycard Avios

IS it that they are trying to get rid of the “charge cards”? I got an offer on my “platinum credit card” but on partners “charge” card

Eight years here on charge card. I called and no offers, not even Green card. In fact I haven’t asked for or received a retention offer in the last two years. Asked them whether they can confirm dining credits will continue in 2025. They couldn’t. Asked to speak to someone more senior, they said that it will very likely change, but can’t confirm or specify to what. I don’t trust the call centre agents much, but I decided to cancel as numbers don’t work for me any more. HSBC PWE satisfies my needs for half the price and don’t need Avios.

No, I don’t think so. My friend’s got a credit card and they can’t get a retention offer at all since opening two years ago.
