Tried asking for a retention bonus on the chat yesterday but only offered a downgrade to gold (1 year fee free at least). Getting towards two years as platinum, gold for a few years before that, never had a retention bonus before. I thought I’d put 10k through the card since my last renewal but I might be just short of that so I might try again next month.
Withdrawing the dining credit could be a deal breaker for me so if nothing is confirmed before my next renewal I’ll have to decide whether I’d want to chance it.
If the pro-rata refund policy remains in place I’m more inclined to wait and see, but if/when Amex do decide to change this, will they be obliged to give notice, or will the original notice given of the policy change mean they could just do it overnight?
Slightly off topic but can anyone share experiences with the platinum upgrade link?
I’ve passed my anniversary membership date so my gold fee will post on the upcoming 13th statement, but currently getting the “We’re sorry. You do not have a card eligible for this offer.”
Spending has been somewhat minimal on the card, maybe 10k in the past 12 months.
@Nomad312 If you hold a credit card (very likely since charge cards were withdrawn about two years ago), they’ve already given you notice in November when they announced the fee increase. This means they can remove pro-rata refund at any point without telling you.
Requested via chat any retention offer on my Platinum. Agent asked me to elaborate on what I meant and by the time I’d finished typing, he’d offered me 35,000 MRPs, which I felt was very helpful, and I gratefully accepted.
Phoned yesterday to cancel my Platinum (after calling earlier in the year and taking a 35k MR offer) and the agent was adamant both the dining credit and Harvey Nicols credit will be renewed next year in the same form as they currently are. Wasn’t too sure whether to trust this information but after getting the same response from the agent several times on the call, I decided to keep the card. He didn’t know when the website would be updated to reflect this.
The Deliveroo credits extended 2-3 times and there was no mention of this, so isn’t out the window for these offers to get extended. I don’t even think I saw any article or mention about the Deliveroo credits but there definitely will be fat articles and discussions about how terrible the Platinum offers are.
Perhaps they read our thread on the survey and decided a Starbucks subscription wouldn’t be interesting enough.
Will / have Amex claw back credited retention offer if we decide to downgrade back down to Gold a week later?

My standard response to such claims by any representative of any company is to ask them confirm this in writing. It’s easy for representatives to make claims that make the caller feel reassured.

No the offer is not contingent on anything you do
Just to report back on what happened here. I downgraded for Gold, only for about a week or so. I then followed the upgrade link, and was upgraded immediately. The offer was 40k points for 6k spend in three months.
I spoke to Amex, and they confirmed I had already used the local dining credit for the year, so you dont get it again (unsurprisingly!).
This then is potentially a workaround for people who are not eligible for a retention offer. I plan to get the 40k points, use the abroad dining offer, the H2 Harvey Nicks offer, and then decide whether to keep the Platinum Card or not.
What would be great is if they offer me a retention offer then!
@kempc23, let us know how it goes.
Was the plat card issued in same number as the gold one? If yes, you’ll likely get the deliveroo credits.
I received 50K with no spend trigger today after speaking to a lovely agent in Brighton. I have had the charge card since 2022, and I received 35K last year. I put ~£30K through the card in the last year.
Went back on to chat this morning, 12 months have now passed since my last retention bonus, 35k offered and accepted.
@BBbetter, I had the gold card for such a short time, im not even sure if the numbers are the same! But, the Deliveroo offer does still show on my offers, but expiring in October.
Do you know this from experience, its a decent perk for me, and is as good as £10 pm cash.
Yes, if it’s saved even after the upgrade, it will work.
It has been extended in the past, so fingers crossed.Do you know this from experience, its a decent perk for me, and is as good as £10 pm cash.
I upgraded from the Gold to the Platinum and used Deliveroo in March, and got the £5 credit. After a few weeks, the Deliveroo offer vanished. Not sure if Amex CS manually removed it because I had asked them about a different offer.
When is the best time to contact Amex re: retention offers? My annual fee is due on 15th of next month, so just 3 weeks away. I received a pretty good offer last year as I remember, so fingers crossed. Thanks for any advice!!
I think they only offer once every 13 months, although someone might be able to confirm they got one sooner than that. So you might want to wait, but obviously whilst pro-rata refunds are still allowed.
I got one on 22 may 23, successful 23 may 24. I was denied a couple of weeks ago.
After the offer of the green card on the web chat, called up this morning and spoke to a lovely lady in Brighton and she offered me monthly payments or downgrade to gold. I enquired about pro rata refunds and she confirmed it’s still ok but could change. I’ll keep the card until next month as heading to Vegas and will make use of the dining credit and car hire cover.
If you’re able to downgrade to Green then you have a charge card, so the pro-rated refund change won’t affect you even when it does come in.
Just paid my first renewal for platinum this month. I called last month, about 5 weeks before the renew was due, and was offered 50k MR points which I took. I did go directly for cancelling, and was asked why. I told them because the fee is higher, I can no longer justify having the card. Then she went onto the retention offer.
Renewal not until October but asked about cancelling today and was offered 50k MR. Spend about £4-5k a month on the card.

Was this your first retention offer?
