So assume the strategy here is to wait until a month out and just call and ask to cancel.
Probably £15-20k of spend on this card – is it optimistic to get 50,000 points or is that for ‘proper’ spenders only?
I probably do £25-30k a year….and have had 2 50k retention bonuses.
Great. Appreciate the data point.
Genuinely find the card benefits great but always looking for a few bonus points.Business Platinum customer for just over 2 years. Spend around £600k pa. Never tried to cancel before. Asked to cancel on live chat and currently no retention offers available, so was fine seeing me go. Held off cancelling for now.
I have a similar spend profile on my business plat. Was just offered £55 statement credit as a retention offer. This is now the second year that I’ve had this rather meagre offer, although it is better than nothing.
When I was spending similar amounts, I managed to get double points for 6 months on my Business Gold for two years running. You can imagine how many points I racked up as a result.
Upgraded to Platinum and so far only £55 as well. Should have stuck to Gold, perhaps.
We hardly use OH Plat, just for the dining credit and whenever a decent offer comes along. Last year she got a 35k retention bonus. Annual fee will post next week, have asked today and she’s been told that no retention offers are available for her. Guess it’s time to reset the 24-months clock.

Would suggest waiting for fee to post then ask.

I have both the Business Gold and the Business Platinum, so far no retention offers.
Sounds like they’ve tightened up recently, as many aren’t getting any retention offer or a very low one? Recently 30k-50k points seemed the norm.
There were even reports of multiple offers in the same year. I opened my card in January and got the 75k bonus and then in April I asked about offers threatening to downgrade and was offered 50k. I’ve chanced it a few times including today to see if there are any other offers but they’re quoting my previous retention offer and suggested to check back around April 2025 (one year after my previous retention). Not even December/jan which is close to my anniversary date but I won’t take this one agents word too seriously.
@sturgeon – well, it does seem a little overoptimistic / unrealistic to expect another retention just three months after the last! Presumably you are also entitled to the 25k SUB balance next April as well?
It’s not a great card, but to expect to be paid 75k in Jan + 50k in Apr + 35-50k in Jul for a £650 fee…
I don’t think that your experience is evidence of Amex tightening up as it is entirely consistent with the pattern of retentions offered and reported here since 2021.
It’s definitely unrealistic, I was surprised enough to be offered 50k after 3 months and £10k spend. I’d just read other posts on here with people saying they’d had several retention offers within the year and hence it suggested Amex have loosened up slightly. Yes I’m due the 25k in my 2nd year, I’m sincerely hoping for a retention close to then as I was never going to find enough value to justify £650 fee-it only made sense for the sub bonus.
Called yesterday but no offer available – told to call back after 24th July which was when I got my last one, which was 35k
Went on chat today and was offered 50k MR points when I said I was considering cancelling, didn’t even have to ask about a retention offer. All sorted within 2 minutes.
This is my 4th retention offer on this card. Previous offers were 35k, 50k, and 35k.
Just over a 1 year gap between each retention offer (this time, 1 year and 2 days).
For me, it’s worth keeping this card with the continued retention offers. But the benefits don’t stack up without it.
I thought I would add a data point. 35K MR offered via chat. I happily accepted straight away and the points were showing, even though I didn’t get the 50K MR i’ve had a couple referral offers over the last year.
Upgraded to Platinum from Gold in Jan 24 (75K MR + 25K MR in month 15) – Held my Gold card for 3 years no retention offers
Referrals bonus points:
Gold – OCT 23 – 14K + 2 additional MR for 3 months
Platinum – APR 24 – 18K + 3 additional MR for 3 months (just ended)I recently just gotten the BAPP (60K) – haven’t hit the spend yet
I notice that the Hilton “spend £200, get £50 back” offer has automatically extended the expiry date from 1 July 2024 to 13 September 2024.
If the offer was previously used, does the new expiry date constitute a new offer that can be used again? I’d ask Amex but I don’t have any faith their agents would give me an accurate answer, so was wondering if anyone had real-life experience of putting another £200 through after already triggering the cashback and after the expiry date had updated?
I don’t think it has. Are you confusing it with the APAC version?
But in any case no it would only be a new offer if it was fresh and resaved not if a “recently redeemed” now had a new end date.
Thanks for response, and apologies – I can see that I mis-clicked on the wrong thread.
I am about to complete 3k spend in 2 months time to get the 60k bonus on my BAPP. I am not interested in 2-4-1. What is better option to cancel the card now and save on annual fees and restart the 24 mth cycle or to swap to Gold card if that is an option?

Tried again today, no bonus. Have transferred MRs to BAEC and will cancel once they arrive.
I’ve just reached the one year anniversary of my last retention offer so time to try again.
It’s probably been mentioned numerous times in this post so apologies for asking again. When using the online chat, do you take a similar approach to if doing so over the phone (eg ask to speak to someone from the retentions team?). I think all my attempts to do get some points using online chat have failed so clearly I was doing something wrong. I assume using the app as opposed to the website is irrelevant?
When on the chat a few weeks ago about a different matter, I thought I’d try asking about a retention offer as I was on there. I just asked if there were any offers on my account, the agent said they would check and came back a few minutes later with a 35k points offer. A several weeks before that I’d taken the same approach and ws told I only had a downgrade to gold on y account, so I assume the extra spend in the intervening time qualified me.
@Nomad312 thanks, sounds like all customer agents have access to that information, albeit not instantaneously
Got my platinum card in January 2024 and received the 80k MR bonus approx April after £10k spend.
Went on chat today as recently used the £150 UK restaurant cashback and also the £50 Harvey Nics offer and wasn’t sure I’d be able to get that much more value out of the card – after a few questions about why I wanted to cancel, was offered and accepted 50K MR points without any real hassle and no attached spend.
Happy with the result.Had the platinum charge card for about 4 years now I think. Have previously received 35k MR as a retention, probably 2 years ago.
Saw the renewal fee post recently so called and got offered 35k which I accepted.Just wondered, is there anything to stop me moving the MR pts, and cancelling the card to get pro-rated fee refund. I would be more than a bit nervous doing this as I wouldn’t want to get a black mark against my relationship with them.
I thought my renewal due next month as my latest monthly statement came with an annual spend/fee statement, so went on chat in app this morning to say with fee increase etc not sure I would continue with Platinum & to ask if any retention offers available in my account. After checking was offered 50K which I accepted. Renewal & annual fee billing is apparently early October so I’m not sure why I got the annual spend statement mid July unless that ties in with my old gold account.
It will tie in with your old gold card as that’s the anniversary of opening the account. The annual fee is due when you upgraded. It’s like when people change their the cards the annual spend window for the voucher and the fee are completely disconnected.
My BAPP renews in August. I’ve just triggered my 241 and the collection year starts again in February. I’ve been with Amex for 23+ years and have never asked for a retention offer before.
I used the chat to ask about retention offers and was told:
“In recognition of your loyalty to us I would like to offer an exclusive Offer. If you spend £15,000 in the next 6 months you will get a £50 statement credit. This will be added to your Account once spend has been made. This could help to offset the fee increase which will be applied on your next card anniversary date after 1st Aug 2024.
• This statement credit is in addition to your standard Avios earn rate, where you will collect 22,500 Avios from this spend.
• You don’t need to take any action, if you accept this Offer, I will enrol you now”.I felt a bit insulted, tbh. Is there a recommended script if I were to phone tomorrow and ask again?
