Forums Payment cards American Express Post your American Express Platinum retention offers here!

  • 72 posts

My BAPP renews in August. I’ve just triggered my 241 and the collection year starts again in February. I’ve been with Amex for 23+ years and have never asked for a retention offer before.

I used the chat to ask about retention offers and was told:

“In recognition of your loyalty to us I would like to offer an exclusive Offer. If you spend £15,000 in the next 6 months you will get a £50 statement credit. This will be added to your Account once spend has been made. This could help to offset the fee increase which will be applied on your next card anniversary date after 1st Aug 2024.
    • This statement credit is in addition to your standard Avios earn rate, where you will collect 22,500 Avios from this spend.
    • You don’t need to take any action, if you accept this Offer, I will enrol you now”.

I felt a bit insulted, tbh. Is there a recommended script if I were to phone tomorrow and ask again?

Sorry, just realised this thread is for the platinum card. I guess Amex don’t offer retention deals for the BAPP?

My card renewed in May, only just realised so called the helpline as the online chat drew a blank. The call centre retentions guy offered 50k straight off, with no conditions.

Same as above, but sent a message saying ‘Not finding value in offers anymore, thinking of cancelling’. Immediately offered 50k points.

Just offered got 50k after complaining that the card is not offering value – gave the example of the emirates points and was offered 50k straight away

Had 50k in Jan, just hit renewal, too soon? 😂

What’s a reasonable timeframe to even try this? Just before your yearly payments are due or right after? I assume people can only get this “retention offer” at max once a year?

Probably a bit more often, say every ten to eleven months (there have been reports of shorter periods between offers, but quite rare). They are clowns, but generous ones.

I wonder if there is anything lost if I give a certain sob-story about offers / lack of availability as above. I do think this is slightly abusing a system, however so I’m definitely in two minds about it!

I do have 2 FHR bookings coming up, so obviously wouldn’t lie about total lack of benefits as that is simply untrue and great deals are to be had at the same time.

@Simey – they will tell you all the good points about the card (if they dig deep). You should be able to maintain a clear conscience by mentioning all its shortcomings, including more competitive products from other providers, as they impact you. Higher annual fee, uncertainty about dining offer/HN next year, difficulty accessing lounges, low points earning/high FX fees, insurance pre-existing conditions limitations and limited travel inconvenience cover, reduced number of relevant offers to cover these shortcomings. Add/delete as applicable!

Well – I gave it a go and after a few clarifying questions about “why?” or “do I know the full benefits of the card?” I was offered 50K.

I am situated in Belfast – so as a starter, unless I go to the mainland my £150 dining credit in the UK is worthless. (Well, there is an Ivy getting set up here soon so I wonder if that’s the case going forward.. anyway) I was aware of this pre-application, but it was a reasonable point to bring up.

Just a data point for others I guess. I obtained the card in around October / November last year and have spent a fair sum on it as we use it as our daily whilst waiting for BAPP voucher period to re-start.

I tried – twice. First time got told no retention offer and if I wanted to proceed to cancel. Second time got told no retention offer and to downgrade to Green.

Oh well… May try in a few months.

I am not too sure how soon is too soon, but I also don’t want to me flagged as a serial complainer and I do believe others are a bit more brave than I am to attempt this any more than once every 12 months..

Depends how much time passed from you having the card, spend, etc.

In my case at least, it seems to be only one per year exactly. My first retention bonus was in July 2021, and I’ve had to wait one year in between each one, having now received four in total. I’ve tried twice just two weeks before the year is up (including this year), to be told nothing is available on my account.

My recent experience is the same as @Gavin454.

I thought I last got my offer on June 30th 2023, so I tried again two weeks ago. I was told the only offer available to me was downgrading my card. Fortunately towards the end of the conversation the agent said my last retention offer was on the 31st July 2023 so I knew I was likely to have a different outcome in a few weeks. I just reached out and was instantly told that the 35,000 MRs offer was available to me.

Player 2 has had card since December. Asked a few times in the past about retention offers, nothing. She asked the other day and was offered 50,000 MR, which was gladly accepted.

Went on live chat and explained I like the cards and benefits but the fee has gone up and if there was any sort of retention bonus available.

    Offered me 50k points immediately.

I’ve asked for a retention bonus some 13/14 months ago (cant remember how much it was) and got offered 35k points today – annual fee due in 2-3 weeks.

Just tried something similar as coming to the end of my card membership year. Also got 50k, many thanks.

50,000 MR without even trying, that’s 3 years in a row. The agent I spoke with went on to give me a cash value for the points.

I did mention that if I referred my wife there would be 63,000 MR plus £400 travel spend but that got me no where.

I have now almost fully recovered the cost of 2 x one way J flights to Sydney I took last Christmas!!

I asked directly what retention offers were available and they offered 35k without questions. They also gave me their cash value for those points, interesting!

Similar for me today – 35k offered with no need to go through any discussion about card benefits etc, and they also quoted cash value. One year and 2 days since my last bonus!

Has anyone had any luck getting an offer on the business platinum card?

A year since my last retention offer exactly. Been offered 35k points, maybe the lesser offer because I’ve been putting most of my spend through the card (thanks to a refer a friend and receive 3x points offer). Happy with that, I’ve made my fee back now 🙂

What are the conditions on these retention offers?

Could you take 50k points as offered and still cancel a few months later for example?

@antuk No go for me but I got 120k ish from it’s SUB so was more than happy.

    @Geoggy
from comments here and my own experience. No problems in closing after. It’s a retention offer not a gun to the head forced to stay.
