I finally got round to following the HfP recommendation from this article https://www.headforpoints.com/2023/07/16/swap-amex-gold-charge-card-to-gold-credit-card/# to change my Preferred Rewards Gold charge card to the equivalent credit card in order to claim the first year free – fully aware I wouldn’t qualify for any sign up bonuses.
I called Amex to double check that this needed to be a new application and that my points account would be unaffected. They advised that if I applied for the credit card without cancelling the charge card I wouldn’t qualify for the first year free.
Alternatively I could cancel the charge card, wait 90 days and then apply for the gold credit card, in which case I’d qualify for the first year free (but of course wouldn’t qualify for any other SUBs). They also said I’d lose my points going this route.
Has anyone any recent experience of changing from the charge to credit recently? Is it no longer possible to do this in order to benefit from the first free year?
This sounds like nonsense to me, purely because it’s a totally different product legally. Nothing stops you having both if you really want to.
Apply for ‘new’ Gold (with first year free) and then cancel the existing Gold charge if you’re accepted, once the new card has arrived and you’ve registered it against the same MR account. The only risk here is that you’re not accepted for the credit card because Amex doesn’t want to extend more credit to you.
