Referring others from an Amex Plat (18k) – can they take any card?

Silly question as the title says, but just as a bit of wider context I’m an Amex Plat holder and looking to squeeze more value out of this card…Both Player 2 and I have personal AMEX cards so we’re not eligible for any sign up bonuses whatsoever, nor inclined to go cold for 2 years…

Am thinking of referring Player 2 from my Plat for fee-free cards (given the end of pro-rata refunds) – do I still get the 18k or is it only for the Amex Platinum? I’m thinking I could refer for an Amex Gold (first year free), and then in 6 months refer for a Nectar card (first year free) and then cancel them both within 12 months, getting 36k.

Yes. You will get 18k no matter what card is chosen. The default will be Platinum but you, sorry P2, can then browse for other cards.

No guarantees how Amex will treat you both longer term of course, should they start to care more about multiple referrals to the same person, but that’s a small (but supposedly increasing?) risk for you to decide on.
