Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Sorry guv’ner, it’s not worth the Avios

I was despairing of the wine selection in Wine Flyer tonight and deciding to give up and just go back to the Wine Society. I wondered if other people find some of this Avios malarkey is just not worth being forced down some marketeer’s choices. The last time this happened with me was with the Barclays current account where the customer service was so terrible I stayed with First Direct.

Anyone else got things they can’t be paid to switch from?

First Direct for sure. Can’t be dealing with either Barclays or HSBC Premier…!

Also the BA Avios e-store is not worth the hassle unless it’s the only source of extra benefits.

+1 for FD. I’ve got other accounts for various benefits but FD has been my main bank for over 30 years, never had a complaint about them.

I know it’s not very PC, but probably iPhones and iPads as well! Not cheap but they facilitate communication, and store books and music and are a game changer for packing light.

I can’t be bothered with Laithwaites/ Wine Flyer, Waitrose for wine is much easier for me.
I didn’t bother with the BA pre-paid mastercard which saved a lot of grief. Starling account is great.

When star alliance are selling RTW tickets in Biz for 3600 euro with up to 15 stops and no hassles and properly defined rules like OW and Avios tickets, it makes you stop and think.

Wine Flyer only works when there’s a huge promo on and now they’ve dropped Nanny State I don’t even look at them.

RTW for €3600? Is that starting in Cairo because of currency issues, or another deal I’ve missed?

Yes me too on interested in that given United flying the Pacific. RTW business would be interesting if not bonkers.

This article suggests much more than €3600 and $9000 for business is a little more than the OW RTW prices I’ve seen, though for some itineraries that would still be massively cheaper than individual fares.

Yes but it’s easy to get from here to Cairo and then just end the route back in the UK

    +1 for FD.
    +1 for Apple stuff.
    Wise.
EV for local trips. It doesn’t really make any financial sense anymore but it’s just so much *nicer*.
EE for mobile. I wouldn’t use VF or 3 if they were free.

Agreed, I’ve bought the Wine Flyer wines before when there’s been an amazing offer on, but they’re not that great.

I much prefer the wines available at the Wine Society (their 150th anniversary collection looks brilliant), BBR, or even Sainsbury’s.

I can’t be bothered with wine flyer unless there is an enhanced offer on like it was at Xmas (4000 avios maybe?) despite them spamming me every other day, with un-tempting cases. Waitrose is better.

I also am not inspired to change from Nationwide to Barclays despite being an avios hunter, Sometimes customer service is just worth more, although I guess I could just be lucky/unlucky with my local branches. Nationwide swift and they seem to know what they are doing at the counter, so you don’t need to keep booking appointments, my Barclays is a zoo, probably because they have closed so many.

Fast loosing faith in BA Estore, started off OK, but now nothing posts.

Another +1 for First Direct. Have a secondary bank account that I use to harvest the switch bonuses but I’d only switch away from FD as my ‘main’ account if the customer service took a nosedive. I’m unlikely to get an Android phone anytime soon either, it took me a few years to switch to iPhone but everything is just so much easier.

Revolut. Haven’t looked back since I switched to Wise. Revolut was just too much hassle always ambushing with requests for yet another selfie for no good reason when you went in to get something quick done.

And if Wise’s new fees or their recent excess requests to people I know to re-ID themselves for no good reason and it took weeks to resolve for those people…for no good reason… If Wise does too much more of this then I’ll be looking for another provider.

xe.com is looking ok to replace Wise for transfers on a quick look. Not quite yet looking to replace Wise but will if the hassle factor increases.

Not quite yet looking to replace Wise

Wise is still run by good people for now so stick with it!

Revolut are on a mission to become the Amazon of the financial world, some would say they are trying to grow too fast and NOT focussing on the customer like Amazon have always done… I find them shoddy.

Revolut had serious HR issues. Threatening and forcing staff to sign ‘voluntary’ resignations to avoid redundancy costs.
They also have issues getting an auditor opinion and a serious lack of internal controls.

Atlantic Money have a nice app and are much cheaper for international transfers now Wise has increased their fees (if that’s what you use wise for). Also someone above mentioned ee, 1p mobile actually use their network but unlike other mvno’s you get unrestricted speed, wifi calling, volte, roaming in Europe and all 5g bands etc. I compared with a ee sim and got the same exact speed. As far as I can tell they also prioritise signal the same as ee (or pretty close to ee).

Thanks for the tip, I’d never heard of Atlantic.

Because of the fixed fee, they are cheaper when converting larger amounts (more than 330GBP>EUR or 460EUR>GBP), with Wise cheaper when sending smaller amounts. Atlantic take several days longer unless you pay an extra fee which increases those numbers a little.

Those extra few days of holding your money are I guess where they are making extra money from.

Lose faith at your peril. I’ve earned nearly 50,000 Avios from the eStore in the past year with no missing Avios and no real effort.

My ‘sorry guv’nor’ is council tax or other transactions where paying by card takes effort. I certainly can’t be bothered to walk to a Pay Point or withdraw cash using Curve to earn a handful of points.

It makes me laugh the amount of time people spend on this.

Shoddy is the least of it @ChrisBCN and @BBBetter.
