I have been trying to book rooms a number of stays for some upcoming trips I found it impossible to get decent value, compared with cash, from points purchased at .4p. I have been buying points in the 100% bonus sales for years and have always been able to redeem for better value than cash.
I found a reference to a possible devaluation in another thread here on general pricing of IHG hotels- the source was Flyertalk and having looked on there it is clear that there has been a devaluation which varies in % terms around the globe (as much as 30%+).
Unless this move is reversed it is not worth buying points even at the 100% bonus rate.
Unless you are getting points ‘free’ from business travel the scheme seems hardly worthwhile anymore.
Having been in this scheme and its precursors since it was Forte Posthouse (early 1990s) I think this could be the final straw!
I agree that if this change remains, points buying no longer makes sense.

Let’s hope they never cotton on to my holiday sweet spots 🤞
