Forums Payment cards American Express Tracking spend target

I seem to remember that when I first got the BAPP Amex, there was a progress bar in the app which showed progress towards bonus points and the 241 voucher.

Am I misremembering? I can’t see spend target tracking in the app for BAPP or Platinum Amex. Can you get this elsewhere?

    Thanks

Ah… problem solved. Turns out I had a Gold Amex less than 2 years ago so I am not eligible. I called Amex to verify this prior to applying and was told I am eligible. They have gone to review call recordings. The battle commences…

You’re eligible for the 241 regardless if or not if you’re eligible for the welcome bonus. There’s possibly a mixup conflating the two, somewhere. A gap smaller than two years would make you ineligible for the welcome bonus Avios, but you’d be OK for the 241.

Sorry – was talking about platinum bonus eligibility.

I can’t see a spend tracker for the BAPP 241 either. Is there usually one?

Yes, there’s usually a 241 spend tracker. You refer to an upcoming battle with Amex; you won’t win if your two years weren’t up at the time of your application, whatever information an Amex might have given you. People need to keep their own records. You have to distinguish between the customer service failure of the misinformation vs the fact that you weren’t eligible. In essence, you can’t get a SUB to which you weren’t entitled because someone made a mistake; it’s not enough for an estoppel argument.

Amex will probably offer you 10-20k Avios max as an apology or less in cash. It looks as though it’s probably a bit late for you now, but the best resolution is sometimes to have the card cancelled and ask Amex to ensure that your 24 month clock is reset to the point it would have been, so that you are then free shortly thereafter to make an application for the full SUB. They can do this, but won’t pro-actively offer.

If the problem is with Plat, you should get the same number of MR or £50-100 GOGW for the mistake.

For what it’s worth, I was once targeted in an email for a SUB I wasn’t eligible for and when I asked about it, the customer service agent gave me bad information too. I was pretty sure they were wrong, but I was legitimately interested in the offer if I was indeed eligible, so I wrote a letter which they ended up treating as a “complaint” – and the upshot was that they gave me my choice of taking out the card and they would manually apply the SUB if I met the advertised spend target, or not taking the card and 10K MR points as an apology.

The circumstances are obviously a bit different (the mis-targeted email, and the fact the SUB in question was significantly more modest than the current 100K), but saying “you won’t win” feels a bit too black-and-white. I agree that you wouldn’t win in a court or at the ombudsman, but my experience shows that Amex does exercise discretion sometimes.

In short – it’s always worth asking, as long as you’re prepared for the answer to be “no”.

Amex handled it really well, to be fair to them. They listened to the recording of the call when I was told I last had a card in 2019 and will honour the 75k bonus. Took about 5 hours to check and call me back. Good service goes a long way.

That aside, where is the spend tracker for bapp 241? I swear it used to be in the app but I can’t find it.

The trackers seem extra hit and miss at the moment as to whether they appear. Mine has not turned up on an application I recently made after a 2yr gap (I have notes on a spreadsheet so I know it was clear by a couple of weeks). Others on here also have mentioned issues.

Oh, but he did. Have a little faith and allow latitude for common sense to prevail.

It took 3 weeks of chasing after hitting the spend target but Amex applied the 75k bonus points today. Full credit to them for resolving this issue sensibly
