I can see plenty of availability for flights from US airports to Cancun for future months if searching for rewards flights on delta’s site.
If I try the same search on Virgins site there is almost zero availability. Usually from previous searches these type of flights are good value on virgin points.
Shouldn’t I be able to book any reward flight seen on deltas flight, through virgins site with miles based on their partnership? Is there an easier way to see delta flights on virgins site as the endless errors when searching without being able to see a calendar of availability is very frustrating.
No.
Delta has now gone to revenue based redemptions, in the main, where the miles price is linked to the cash price. This is why you can now see economy Delta flights at 500,000 miles.
There is a very low threshold under which, it seems, seats get released to partners, eg Virgin can see a seat on a route if it costs less than xx,xxx Delta miles.

https://travelplus.virginatlantic.com/reward-flight-finder, but the data isn’t always wholly correct.
I have some Delta reward flights booked between Atlanta and New Orleans next month through the Virgin website, but only a small subset of the actual Delta flights appear on virginatlantic.com. I don’t think it’s related to the delta.com cost because the selection varies, and sometimes less points through Virgin.
It’s a seamless process where the flights pop up, but it is related to demand whether or not you can see them for a particular route and day.
Ba and American works in a similar fashion.
My recommendation is to transfer some Amex points if you have them into Delta and then you can book directly on delta.com
I’ve always found it super easy to book flights that do’t appear on virginatlantic.com via the call centre. Takes five minutes, usually, sometimes quicker if you get Cardiff.
These aren’t USA internal flights of course…
Appreciate it may not work for your plans, but if looking to travel to Cancun from the UK domestic Mexican flights from Mexico City look quite cheap. In theory Aeromexico flights should be bookable with Virgin Points, though given the cash prices that’s unlikely to give great value on the points.
For getting to Mexico City, Iberia redemptions (with 3 flights/day) are good value if you have Avios (particularly with a new style Amex 2for1).
Of course if you’re starting near Gatwick, the direct BA flight would be easier – I suspect redemption availability gets snapped up quite quickly though for peak travel periods, and is somewhat more expensive than Iberia in business class at least.
