Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We have booked an economy return flight MAN-LHR-LIS using an AMEX BA 241 companion voucher.

    Two-part Q
1a: Can we pay cash and/or Avios to upgrade to business, either by calling in advance or asking when we check in at the airport?

1b: Would we collect tier points on this upgrade part?

If there are business reward seats available you can change the existing booking, but technically it’s a cancel and rebook process, £35 pp plus the avios & cash difference. No cash option in advance.

You can always ask at check if a cash upgrade is available on the day, dependent on how busy the flight is. No avios option at that point.

No points on reward bookings, regardless of whether or not you ‘upgraded’.

If you do decide to cancel and rebook, you can use the “stopover” option to allow you to select each flight separately if you don’t want to pay the extra avios for CE on the short MAN-LHR hop.

Which type Amex Voucher did you use (do you pay for your Amex?)

Not wanting to tell you what to do but is there not a better use of Avios? MAN-LIS direct are often very cheap on TAP and Easy.

I can’t imagine you’re getting great value on your Avios here plus the inconvenience of LHR. But of course, might be the only use you have for them, but just something to consider.

Previous poster raises an interesting point, if it’s the free Amex, you can’t use your voucher for Business so whilst an upgrade at airport might be possible, a call and rebook will not…
