I have been thinking of upgrading from Gold to Platinum for a while and have approx. 9 months left of this years Gold fee. Am I correct in thinking I would be best to upgrade before the T & C changes in Oct so the balance of this years Gold fee will be refunded/offset against the Platinum membership fee?
Also what happens to any balance on the Gold card, is that transferred across to the Platinum account or would it be best to clear it early? Payment isn’t due until around the end of the first week of Oct.
I have just done this on a business card.

Personal Gold to Plat upgrade with 20k bonus is a fairly permanent offer (which was temporarily increased to 40k this time last year). However, both whether they offer upgrades or downgrades and the manner in which they do them (for instance with/without credit check) are entirely controlled by Amex without any published terms, so nothing that can be complained about. As ever, nothing an agent tells you can be relied upon!

Thanks everyone. May not be guaranteed an upgrade, although they have offered it me via my account every so often, and based on the annual amount I put through my Gold card & my repayment record I’d be very surprised (and annoyed) if they refused me, although you never know!
UPDATE – Applied for the upgrade via the link today (thanks JDB for posting the link, meant I didn’t have to search for it) and was approved almost as soon as I had signed the electronic signature. Both the card showing in my account and in Apple Pay turned Platinum before I even received the confirmatory email and I’m guessing the pro rate Gold refund and any Platinum offers that are different to Gold, plus the Harvey Nicks and dining credits etc, will show over the next few days. Very easy, just need to make sure I get full value out of the fee now!

There are no special links for upgrades. Amex ran a promo last year increasing bonus to 40k, but that was on the same upgrade link in your account.
