It seems you can now upgrade the PRGCC to the Platinum Credit Card and also get 40,000 MR points for spending £4000 within 3 months of upgrading

Interesting they link to a separate page to upgrade from Gold charge to Platinum charge – I didn’t think they’d allow any new charge card applications.

Even more interesting that they’re only offering 20k bonus for charge card upgrades!

    Can you easily downgrade afterwards?

    Can you easily downgrade afterwards?

They said yes, inc pro rata refund.

    This is big.
    Thanks Gary Dexter.

Not sure if the upgrade is working as intended.

I hold the Gold Card (recently opened) and the free Rewards Credit Card.

When I click the upgrade link, the header for the upgrade asks me to confirm I wish to upgrade my Rewards Credit Card to the Platinum Card, not upgrade the Gold Card….

“Confirm your Upgrade from The American Express® Rewards Credit Card”

There’s also no mention of the bonus points on the confirmation page.

It’s giving me the option to upgrade ARCC, but the fine print seems to suggest that the 40K bonus will only be received when upgrading from PRGCC

    “Please read:

    1. The 40,000 Membership Rewards bonus points will be awarded onto your Account once you have been approved and you have spent and charged £4,000 within the first three months of Cardmembership. It is only available if you have upgraded from the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Credit Card product. This introductory offer is subject to change and will be withdrawn at any time. Please note that it can take up to 60 days for bonus points to be awarded to your Account. You will not receive this bonus if you have ever received an Upgrade bonus before.”

@Rob – hi, do you have any clarity on this aspect at all?

    Thank you

It would be good to get some clarity on this. I have the Rewards credit card, and was planning to apply for Gold (again) so that I can upgrade to Platinum. I’m holding fire on making any changes until things are a bit clearer.

It would be interesting to know what happens to your annual referral allowance (90k per year) if you upgrade as we are close to Dec 31

Are we close to Dec 31?!

I already have the Platinum Charge and a PRGCC as well. Would I be able to upgrade the PRGCC to a Platinum Credit for the 40k and then downgrade back to PRGCC once the bonus posts?

@richard, @Rob has provided clarity on this now – on the main article page https://www.headforpoints.com/2022/08/21/when-is-it-worth-paying-a-fee-for-a-credit-card/#commentsContent:

    My question:

“Hi Rob, slightly OT – the free ARCC is allowing upgrades to Platinum too, but the fine print on the page says the 40k MR upgrade is only for upgrades from PRGCC – do you have any insight as to whether this is just an oversight, or if it really is the case that ARCC is excluded from the 40k MR incentive?”

    Rob’s response:

“It’s almost certainly excluded. Your average ARCC customer would, in theory, have zero interest in Platinum, whereas Golds are already paying fees in return for benefits.”

I have the ARCC and wanted to upgrade to the Gold for a while but it looks like if I apply for the Gold I would end up with two cards? Well, that’s based on some answers on the forum and on the post. Is that correct? Thanks!

The last I checked I wasn’t able to ungraded from ARCC to Gold and had to apply for the Gold separately.

Carlos has kindly offered to test the upgrade process on behalf of readers, so hopefully we know soon if it’s works as intended.

Yes, its showing up on my app now (took a few hours) but I can confirm it went from ARCC to Platinum, which is a bit of a shame as I was planning to go from useless gold to platinum. I actually wanted to keep the ARCC

Sorry if this is an obvious answer, but couldn’t find anything in T&Cs… I’ve just paid the fee for my second year of the Gold card, would that be pro-rata refunded in the event of a successful upgrade to Platinum? No-brainer if so…

Yes, all Amex cards in the UK do pro-rata fees.

I’m assuming you’re not due 10k bonus points for spending £15k, because if you are then obviously you should wait a month for those.

    That is a shame.
Will you be contacting Amex CS to see if they can intervene?

Thanks for testing this Carlos! So final question, given that it’s upgraded your ARCC and not your PRGCC are you seeing the progress bar to the spend requirement for the bonus on your account?

I’m wondering if this is actually open to ARCC holders despite the terms saying otherwise?

I clicked on the link and logged into both our gold card accounts and both got the message that there was no offer on the accounts 😔

No progress bar but their IT system when it comes to progress bar is always flakey. It comes and goes. Just put a complaint with them if they dont offer the upgrade. It was eligible after all and at the same time you held a gold credit

Don’t forget the terms of the offer state the bonus points are only payable when upgrading from the Gold Card. There’s no mention of any other card being eligible for bonus points upon upgrading.
