Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club Urgent – RTN Avios 241 flight cancelled during trip – advice please

  • 27 posts

We’re currently in Seoul due to fly to Shanghai on Monday 30th in order to catch our BA Club World Amex 241 RTN leg to LHR on Thurs 3. We originally flew to Tokyo HND 3 weeks ago.

BA has just emailed to say our Shanghai – London flight next Thursday is cancelled. What are our options?

There is a flight Tuesday 1st with BA but that means leaving Shanghai almost as soon as we arrive. However we are relying on the 72 hour visa waiver rule for China.

Should we request a ticket with an alternative airline on Thurs 3rd – our original travel day or should we take the BA flight on Tues 1st and have an aborted Shanghai trip staying at the airport?

If we should request an alternative airline – which airline from Shanghai to LHR on Thurs 3 Oct.

    All suggestions gratefully received.

    Jerry

Sorry to hear this. Have you looked at taking a flight direct from Seoul or elsewhere in the region? Depending on what you’re after you may with BA’s assistance (I can hear the laughter) turn a negative into a positive…

Request (demand) a ticket on alternative carrier as near to orginal as possible but within visa constraints, explain these to BA

Don’t ever demaned. It puts the callcentre on the defensive and rarely works. You need to work with the agent.

OP the temptation is just to go with the first option in MMB but iut can take time for it to be populated with others.

So investigate alternative routings to get you back to the UK as close to your original flights – this can be after that date – preferably involving OW partners so perhaps CX via Hong Hong. Does BA fly in the 4th for example?

There is no need to curtail your trip because of this – unless you really want to.

What about other airlines – I think VS still flies to/from Shaghai and maybe China Eastern.

When you’ve investigated decide your priority order so you can put those to the agent.

The better prepared you are when you call and the mpore reasonable you are with the agent the better the outcome.

Freckles – this link is great, thank you. What we’ve been offered – 00:35 Qatar to Doha then 07:25 BA to LHR. 19 hrs 25 mins. Both in business. It’s that or a refund.

    It’s that or a refund.

    Which is nonsense.

Don’t take the refund. Press for rebooking that suits you – see my prior comment

    Request (blockquote>demand)

Had to call BA. Worked out some suggestions inc Virgin before calling. As per Freckles link it seems BA has cancelled a lot of Shanghai flights and didn’t want to negotiate. We tried for returning from Seoul too but it was Qatar/BA or a refund.

At least these flights are same day as our original so mostly our trip is preserved.

I noticed the Shanghai flight was cancelled yesterday while I was in the T5 lounge at LHR – is there something going on there?!

Thanks everyone. Sorted now as per my previous comment. Good luck everyone else this is happening to.

Shanghai is 144 hours rather than 72 hours visa free.

Some people have jumped in at my request (demand) and have said never demand.

I purposefully wrote request (demand) rather than simply request, using 261 is a right not a request. Or simply demand , one should never start off demanding, but in the end explaining your rights and demanding may be necessary.

I thought request (demand) would suffice rather than a book on negotiating tactics
