Which option is the best value, and how is it possible to tell?

Total Price (Including all taxes, fees, and carrier charges)
    97500 Avios + £ 3.00

    More pricing options

    93000 Avios + £ 27.00
    79500 Avios + £ 75.00
    58500 Avios + £ 150.00
    43500 Avios + £ 285.00
    34500 Avios + £ 405.00

Easiest is the 1p per Avios method as per below. But pick your own personal value. If below is wrong, I am tired!

    For,the avoidance of doubt, I would pick 43500 Avios + £ 285.00.

    97500 Avios + £ 3.00. = £978
    93000 Avios + £ 27.00. = £957
    79500 Avios + £ 75.00. = £870
    58500 Avios + £ 150.00 = £735
    43500 Avios + £ 285.00 = £720
    34500 Avios + £ 405.00 = £750

if you value each avios at 1p then the price of each option is

    £957
    £870
    £735
    £720
    £750

Depends also if you can or avios rich

The traditional price (where the co-pay is £17.50 for Y and £25 for J) is typically a contender for the best value. This looks like 3 CE returns, where the traditional option would be 9750 avios * 6 = 58500 avios + £25 * 6 = £150

If you value avios at 1p, the options are costing you:
    £978
    £957
    £870
    £735
    £720
    £750

If you value avios at 0.5p, the options are:
    £490.5
    £492
    £472.5
    £442.5
    £502.5
    £577.5

So 58500 Avios + £ 150.00 is the winner at a low valuation, and is nearly the best at a regular valuation. When comparing with the next option:

    58500 Avios + £ 150.00
    43500 Avios + £ 285.00

you are paying £135 more to save 15000 avios for later, which is acceptable at 0.9p (it’s roughly the price of the avios subscription that some people happily pay) – which of these you choose would depend on how many avios you have, your future plans to use them and whether you are likely to accumulate more

Comparing with the option on the other side,
    79500 Avios + £ 75.00
    58500 Avios + £ 150.00
you would need to spend 21000 more avios and you only save £75 which is awful

It’s the one that suits you!

There have been a couple of times where I have chosen one of the worst value of pence per avios options because I wanted to save some cash rather than save my points.

There was a post here recently of someone doing exactly that and used their avios to part pay a cash fare because saving £ 750 as a couple was better value for them than maximising the avios value down to the 7th decimal place.

At other time I’ve gone for the 1p/avios best value option.

    Thanks all for the responses. I’ll go for the 58500 Avios + £ 150.00 = £735

Unfortunately I’m having issues booking. It’s for 2 adults and 1 child. I can add the 2 adults (information already stored in BA), but can’t add child as the boxes are greyed out. I’ve even added the Childs details to my BA account but it doesn’t appear in the dropdown.

I’m on hold to BA now to sort, but just wondering if I’m missing something obvious? Thanks

You can add a child to household account or even family and friend. How have you added to BA account?

At the risk of asking a stupid question but not intended to be patronising, are you sure you entered the right passenger type for the child’s age (as determined by the DOB recorded with their details). If for example you say 2 x Adult and 1 x Young Adult, any children under 12 won’t appear.

No worries – yes everything was correct. In the end I added it to the ‘family and friends’ list and it worked. I was adding it to the travel companion list. BA seem to make things that should be so simple complicated!

As others have said, it depends on how many Avios you have and what you do with the rest. If you only have enough for “one trip” and not likely to earn more – spend them! If you have lots, you might want to keep some for another trip.

I buy @ 0.9p, and expecting 3-4p value flying Club/First with a 241 or upgrade voucher. YMMV. But 1p is a good baseline. Never understood how they calculate the offers??
