Hi all
I’m going through a pretty major move from the UK to NZ, and one of the (many) things I am looking at is how to best collect/credit my travel.
My business travel will mostly be to Hong Kong and Singapore (J) and Australia (Y). Employer funded, somewhat but not entirely price inelastic – 10-12 trips per year in total. I would generally like to redeem the miles for travel back to Europe / Middle East.
Few initial thoughts I had –
Cathay is obviously OW, whereas Singapore is Star. AirNZ is also Star. Qatar is OW. Etihad and Emirates have no alliance.
I don’t know if there is an equivalent “slam dunk” credit card for earning akin to the BA Amex.
Is Qatar the best value redemption across all airlines mentioned for travel to/from Aus/NZ? Some quirks aside – I see redemptions as 180k Avios to London, but 189k Avios to Doha, and 150k Avios to Dubai (Qantas metal)
Any thoughts gratefully received!
– Singapore has the advantage, if you’re planning to redeem on Singapore, of only releasing premium cabins to it’s own elite members, and the disadvantage of expiring miles after three years.
– I’ve a stash of Cathay Asia Miles too, they’ve devalued recently so hopefully a few years will pass before they do that again…
Can’t claim any expertise but did stumble upon http://www.moneyhub.co.nz via Reddit’s PersonalFinanceNZ (don’t ask – it was a proper doomscroll down the net rabbit hole!). Seemed a good site and respected by the Kiwis on Reddit… The consensus was in favour of OneWorld/BA(!) and an NZ-issued Amex Plat card iirc.
Having recently been contemplating the prospect of the hard expiry of c. 150k of KrisFlyer miles by year-end and the lack of decent options to transfer out (definitely won’t be able to use before deadline), I’d always go for programs where there is no prospect of your hard earned miles being cancelled.
Good luck with the move @chickenegg !
