Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Why do I pay £1 on new Companion Voucher and £50 on old Companion Voucher?

I have a Blue memvership with BA but lots of Avios + companion vouchers (mix of old companion vouchers issued pre the changes and newer companion vouchers) I am trying to book flights for 2 people to a European destination in business both ways (only class available). When I use the old companion voucher I need to pay 36,700 avios + £100 (£50 per person….just says charge per person bearing in mind “Taxes, fees and carrier charges* per person appears as ZERO) but if I use the new companion voucher I need to pay 54,500 avios + £2 (£1 per person….taxes, fees and carrier charges also appear as zero like in the first case)….So what is this £50 per person charge about as its definitely not taxes? Thx

Were you not getting the option to click on the button that gives you other payment options? That would likely give you the choice of using fewer Avios and paying more cash!

The £50 RFS charge incorporates APD (£26), Heathrow short haul passenger service charge (£23.18) plus any other charges at arrival/departure airport which often include things like noise abatement fees as well as airport or customs charges, so in most cases it is a subsidised flat rate price, so a great bargain.

So why does the new companion voucher doesnt have that £50 charge? And is there anything I can do (apart from using the new companion voucher) to avoid paying the £50 (like calling the customer service number?)

Are you sure the option is not there? I’ve seen it where the £1 option is there but no chance to amend to a higher cash less Avios, never the other way.

You understand you’re paying more Avios for that £98 saving … 17800 worth £178

You will have an option to pay the £100 + 36,700 (for 2)

The option appears when you click through to actually purchase not on the flight selection page

Also the £35 and £50 APD are subsidised taxes and fees as your contribution towards the actual costs.

Most people value an Avios at 1p, so the more cash version you are saving 17,800 Avios by paying £98, those Avios are worth £178.
