This just stinks of an IT issue as opposed to individual accounts.
Are AMEX using the same bunch of clowns that BA use? 🤣

Both I and mrs Definitas are blocked on BAPP and ARCC for no apparent reason. We have never abused the system and always pay each month in full by DD. We are both close to the award of a new companion voucher and onky keeo our ARCC as aback up and to keep our Amex reward points. I just find it distasteful that we appear to be being penalised with no actual explanation and no feasible way of obtaining one. I feel like I am being penalised, so much so that I intend to cancel both cards and part company with Amex (I’ll keep one ARCC to pay BA charges until the vouchers have been used and trips flown). The question is how to choose which card to replace the Amex

Yup 100% IT bug but Someone will be along to say the investigations into 100’s of people were concluded on the same day …

Anyone else still having this issue? The option to refer has not been on my account for about 2 months

not currently available on my account either FWIW – I’ve not kept an eye on it recently though so it could’ve disappeared last night for all I know – apols, not much help (other than solidarity! lol)

My referral offer briefly returned when I upgraded my free BA Amex to BAPP at the end of February, but disappeared again a week or two later.

I hope you managed to save the link Alex!

My referral option has not returned and has been missing for several months now ☹️.

My wife cancelled all her cards a couple of months ago (except supplementary ones on my accounts). She will shortly be applying for a new BAPP and I am hoping she will be able to refer again. I’ll report back if it works.

If it’s an IT bug, why does it appear fixed for some and not others? An employee having fun?
My money is on an algorithm, similar to the one that allocates offers and adds or removes the option based on the activity etc.

What I have noticed since it came back was the number of offers on my Platinum card dropping significantly. From around 100 available to now 30 with new ones very rare.

Have noticed the exact same, though not sure they are related. Used to get a TON of offers on my Plat and very few on another personal Amex I hold. Now I get maybe 1/3 as many on the Plat but 2x on the other personal Amex…

Yeah the numbers of offers on Amex cards for me and p2 are about half what they were last year, but still the same amount of spending going through, plus, the offers that do come on these days, are mostly pretty poor and useless.

There are the odd good offers that come through, but the quality and quantity have definitely declined.

    Hopefully a useful data point…

My wife and I have both been unable to use the Amex referral programme for some time. No complaints really as we have referred each other many times over the last few years.

On 28/1/23 my wife cancelled the last of her own Amex cards but she still had supplementary cards on two of mine (with online access).

A few days ago she applied for a new BAPP card. She has just activated it and created a new online account for it. And voila, she can now refer again (or at least it appears to be working as it should, she hasn’t actually done a referral yet). I have made sure to save the link for future use! I don’t know whether creating a new online account was necessary but thought it might improve chances.

Needless to say, I still can’t refer. Now pondering whether to close all my own cards and do the same…

On the subject of referral links… has anyone noticed if the link details change over time? I copied mine and sent it out a few times but didnt get the points when people applied.. then went to compare the link and found it was different to before..

Who would have thunk it. I logged into my Amex account today and there is a big box inviting me to refer a friend showing on all three of my cards. It has a message I’ve not seen before. Finally! It’s just a shame I don’t have any friends.

Conversely my option to refer has *gone* since the expiration of the 13th June Platinum offer!

Anyone else lost the option to create a link?

I still have my old link saved, and have someone wanting a referral – so may have to give it a go!

I haven’t had the option to refer for months, but four people successfully used my old link (generated in 2022) in May. Each time the 18,000 posted within 24 hours.

For info, I ultimately took the decision to close all my Amex cards, wait a few weeks then get my wife to refer me. She has done, I’ve now got the ARCC and a new referral link 😁.

Don’t suppose there’s sufficient logic to the referral links that would enable us to work out what they should be (for those of us without the option)?

Don’t suppose there’s sufficient logic to the referral links that would enable us to work out what they should be (for those of us without the option)?

As examples my wife’s link is:

    https://americanexpress.com/en-gb/referral/eMMAWb2tB?XL=MNANS

    and my link is:

    https://americanexpress.com/en-gb/referral/pETERWtYQj?XL=MNANS

Emma is my wife’s first name and ‘W’ is the first letter of her surname. The ‘?XL=MNANS” at the end is the same on both.

So, it just seems that the “b2tB” bit varies between links. Mine is “tYQj” as you can see.

So you could work out the rest but I can’t see any logic behind those 4 characters. I suppose you could randomly guess them!

You don’t need to do that. Just search your emails for “American Express Referral” You should if you have marketing notifications switched on have at least one historic email from Aemx during an increased bonus promotion encouraging you to share your link. In the email you will find your link!

I’m having this issue too unfortunately. Is there any other way to generate a referral link?

    18 posts

I just noticed I have the same message currently. I don’t think I have done any referrals for at least 18 months. Hopefully it will come back again like some others have reported.
Tried searching my emails but unfortunately the only link I could find was from 2021 and that was a previous card as I closed my BAPP and reapplied to change the anniversary date for voucher purposes.

Panic over, referral option has appeared again and I’ve saved the link this time.

RE “Your Account is temporarily unable to access the Referral Programme, please read our full T&Cs here for more information.” as long as you have the ‘link’ the referrer will still get the points?
