Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Missed payment – Interest charge. Customer Service not able to issue refund

  • ms 69 posts

I mixed up the payment due dates during the Christmas period and didn’t have the phone with the Barclaycard App. Consequently, I was late with the payment. I contacted customer service, but they are refusing to issue a refund. This is the first time this has happened to me on the account, and it is also the first time the bank/card issuer has refused to issue a refund. The amount is over £400. The lady said she doesn’t have the option. Do you have any advice on what else I can do?

@ms obviously it’s entirely discretionary for them to refund any interest you have accidentally incurred but I would expect them to do it once, assuming you have previously always had a pattern of paying in full and not paying interest. I would call again and ask them very nicely.

Set an automatic direct debit for the full amount in future and never have this problem again?

If you’re paying off with by non-Direct Debit means in order to make the money merry-go-round spin a bit faster then fair enough but that’s the game and part of playing it is getting this stuff right.

The product is working exactly as it is meant to and as per the T&Cs: those that don’t pay on time pay fees and interest. That’s largely what makes credit cards as a product viable. Not sure what else you think should happen here?

First time a card issuer has refused a refund? Sounds like you have had a similar situation before on other accounts and managed to be persuasive enough to avoid payment … but failed to learn from the experience. Bet you learn this time. Sorry if all the above sounds harsh, but is any of it unfair?

    An expensive lesson to learn!

I kicked myself when I was charged a couple of quid years ago by MBNA but I didn’t complain as it was my own fault. And I’ve never missed a payment since.

I have my most important financial and travel apps on both my phone and iPad so I have easy access to them at all times.

What’s also useful about Barclaycard is that you can set up a DD for the full balance, but if you pay some of it off early the DD is then adjusted, unlike with some credit cards where they still take the full amount.

edit: sorry only got jist of OPs concern by reading headline. Yeah, no chance. As for the £12 late payment fee, if its your first then they should clear that.

Is £400 the amount of the missed payment or the amount of interest? I wouldn’t expect £400 of interest to be waived.

Yes, £400 is the interest amount. Yes, it did happen to me in the past with Amex and MBNA. Believe it or not, it also happened with Creation. If there was a history of prompt payments before, all were happy to issue the interest amount. Maybe that’s why I’m surprised this time 🙁

I’ve had this myself, just a couple of weeks ago. Paid off the bulk of my bill early on. Went back in before the due date and the app seemed to suggest I had nothing more to pay. I had evidently misinterpreted as a couple of days later I was hit with a £330 interest charge (which represented interest on the full amount, including what I had paid off – as per their T&Cs).

First time it had happened to me. After going round the houses a bit, as a goodwill gesture they applied a credit of £200 but weren’t able to go beyond that (even when escalating).

So the most I think you could realistically get back is £200 but you’ll just need to escalate/speak to the right person in order to get this. Hopefully if you’re nice to them and they see your exemplary record they will be sympathetic!

I might escalate further myself but at the same time appreciate they probably didn’t have to provide anything (though I did think the app was misleading re the outstanding payment) but let’s see

Thanks for the tip, wish I’d known that! Will set it up

With so many examples prompt payments is quite a stretch

Perhaps don’t make the call I suggested before you disclosed the facts which make your original post quite redundant. Barclays shouldn’t refund any interest or make any goodwill payment. I’m afraid the financial industry isn’t there to encourage administrative chaos and if you were experiencing financial difficulties such that you couldn’t make payments on time, you needed to contact them earlier. Barclays principally operates at the lower end of the market, so they are quite inured to bad excuses.

You’ve already learned a harsh lesson. But what in a £400 possible interest payment did you not prioritise properly? That’s huge. It’s also nice to have other unused cards with the usual 0% no fee 6.8% balance transfers for example for emergencies like these.

You’ll be fine but as stated before part of the game is being organised. Print out a payment sheet if you have to. Good luck.

    @jsto
, which number did you use to contact Barclaycard?
