Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Huge 18,700 Avios for ONE UK Avis rental – but does it make sense?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Iberia Plus and Avis have launched a very low key promotion which a HfP reader flagged up last night. If you can make this work for you, you could do very nicely.

Take a look here.

Avis is offering 18,000 Avios if you book a Group C car, or above, for 3 days or more, starting on 8th, 9th or 10th December.

Avis 350

You will also earn at least 700 base Avios for the rental.

If you can get a good rate from your local depot this could be a real winner.

The devil is in the detail with offers like this.  If you are thinking of taking part, read the rules carefully as well as my summary below.

You will earn these Avios in Iberia Plus.  You will need a free Iberia Plus account to take part.  You will not get the bonus if you credit to avios.com or British Airways Executive Club.

You must book on avisiberia.es, iberia.com or avis.es.   Bookings on avis.com or avis.co.uk do not qualify.

Your rental must be in the UK, mainland Spain, Balearics and Canaries, Italy, France, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, Belgium or Holland.

The deal is NOT valid on Prestige rentals, Chauffeur Drive or van rentals.

You cannot use any other coupon, promotion or frequent flyer points offer.  This implies to me that you must book at the standard Avis rate.  It even implies that using the Iberia discount code would disqualify you.  This may be taking the rule too literally but you don’t want to risk 18,000 Avios.

It is worth pricing up a 3-day rental from your local Avis depot.  Try out rentals starting on the 8th, 9th and 10th for three days for a Group C or above.  If the price works then it could be worth renting a car and sticking it on your drive for the weekend.

I tried a random booking in Bolton and got a price of €51 – a bargain for 18,700 Avios.

Unfortunately, because I can’t park anywhere near my own house without a parking permit, it isn’t one for me.  If you can make it work for you it could go nicely.  Just make sure you follow the rules to the letter.

Just booked Fri 9th – Mon 12th for €49.15 in York. Pick the car up on Friday afternoon, stick it in the company warehouse over the weekend and return it Monday morning. Equates to about £0.0023ppa if I am working it out correctly. Splendid.

  • James says:

I keep getting this error message, even when I tried Gatwick Airport:

Sorry, our system is not able to locate your Wizard profile with the information you have entered. Please check your information. (GB-GB-EW024)

    Anyone else?

    • Simon says:

you are (probably) putting your iberia number in the avis preferred box – leave it blank.
      I did the same.

      • James says:

That’s it. Slightly misleading as it asks about Iberia status! Cheers for the tip.

  • barafear799 says:

how do I get an Iberia account? Just sign up?
Do I remember from previous promos, there is a 90 day wait to combine avios across to BAEC or Avios?

  • Simon Fisher says:

    I get the error

    Any ideas anyone?

I tried entering my Iberia number with IB and without in the box passenger number. Is that what it is asking for?

    Booking from UK Mainland.

    • BigDave says:

Dont put your ‘iberia plus number’ where they are asking for the ‘avis preferred number’
the Iberia plus number is entered with your address and contact/payment details later.
I know I did the same thing!

  • Jesus says:

It would be possible to book, pay and don´t pick the car up and get the avios?

  • barafear799 says:

Oooo…..after much faffing about, found a rental from Coventry (I live in Hertfordshire!!) for 49 Euros!!

  • JohnNI says:

My wife thinks I am going over the top with all this points collecting. Just booked a car from Derry airport which will require a coach to the airport. The car will do about 40 miles and sit in my drive. She has agreed to pick me up when I return it though.Mind you she didn’t complain when we travelled first class to Miami and back from St Lucia where we got married last June. Thanks to HFP we have just booked business to Orlando and have enough points plus 2 2-4-1 vouchers to book a trip to Japan.

    • BigDave says:

mine will only be a short bus ride and sit in our parking all weekend, then return it and get the bus back home – still she will think I am nuts, I’d better show her what some of you folk will do for this

    • Cate says:

Same here, hubby thinks access to No1 Lounge at Gatwick this weekend before going to BCN in Clubworld just happened by chance :-). Have booked car hire for both of us so am expecting lots of questions why we need to hire two cars when they’re just sitting on the drive for three days…..

Thanks for the heads up Rob!

    • the real harry says:

for this very reason I am unlikely to go for this deal

I could conceivably do it without my best beloved even knowing by driving over, parking the hire car on the street then driving back/ repeat in reverse 3 days later

but I don’t want to tip my luck over the edge 🙂

already had a bit of fun getting the Naked Wines in the attic last night before she came home…

      • the real harry says:

        oh! &
        29 NOV 2016 http://WWW.NAKEDWINES.COM -£100.00
        🙂

        • Simon Fisher says:

Voucher is only for new customers, but certainly worth trying. I am a longstanding customer and love their customer service and ethos. Shame they don’t do Avios 😉

          • the real harry says:

nope I meant I got my Amex deal £100 off
plus my other Amex deal £100 off
            so £250 of wine for £50 🙂

you should have been there lol

  • Andrew Clark says:

This is perfect. I can pick up next to my work at the Guoman Hotel on Tower Bridge, I have a spare car for the weekend (which is very handy) and I can pop it back on Monday morning instead of commuting. 100 Euros for a Group E car for three nights is good value anyway in London…..
