Official: here are the IHG Rewards Club welcome benefits by hotel and tier level

One of the few guaranteed status benefits in IHG Rewards Club – if you are staying in Europe – is the ‘welcome amenity’ which is offered at check-in.  These are rarely anything to set the pulse racing but they are a gesture, especially at hotels where the rooms are virtually identical and there is little scope for upgrades or special treatment.

There has been some confusion in recent months about what is offered where.  In particular, some Crowne Plaza hotels have been offering club lounge access to Spire Elite guests.  Some, but not all.

A HfP reader was at a UK Crowne Plaza last week and complained that he was not offered an upgrade to the lounge, even though the hotel was willing to sell him access.  The hotel gave the reader a copy of its internal IHG guidelines to prove that it was not obliged to offer lounge access.   He passed it on to me and it is worth a look.

Here are the IHG Rewards Club welcome benefits by elite status level

Here is the chart (click to enlarge) which came into effect in January 2017 in Europe:

IHG status levels and welcome amenities

As you can see, IHG is attempting to vary the offering by both brand and by membership tier.  This leads to 15 possible combinations of welcome amenity.

Top left is the most interesting.

A Crowne Plaza in Europe is meant to offer Spire Elite members 600 points or a drink and snack voucher or club lounge access.

This is a slightly odd choice, since the points are worth around £3, the drink / snack around £5 and club lounge access – based on the upsell price – around £50!

Here’s the catch though.  The hotel is allowed to make the lounge access benefit ‘subject to availability’ which could mean anything.  Hotel staff are told that they should always use the phrase “on this occasion” when offering club lounge access.

Importantly, lounge access is only for the Spire Elite member personally.  If you are sharing your room with your partner, they will not receive access.  You also cannot bring any guests into the lounge.  (Not all hotels will follow this rule, of course, but this is IHG’s suggested position.)

What are the other Spire Elite benefits?

Looking down the chart, there isn’t a lot else on offer for Spire Elite members on top of the Platinum Elite benefits:

At a Hotel Indigo, you can have a cocktail as your welcome drink – Platinum members cannot

At Staybridge Suites, you will get two drink and snack vouchers instead of one

At Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express hotels, whilst there is technically no difference between the Spire Elite and Platinum Elite amenities, Spire Elite members are meant to be offered a better choice of drinks at the point of redemption

Many hotels, of course, will go further for Spire Elite members.   These guidelines don’t cover room upgrades, which can be decent at a Crowne Plaza.  I booked a Junior Suite in Salzburg in February and ended up with a 2-bedroom suite, for example.  You also need to remember that Spire Elite members receive a 100% bonus on base points, which allows you to rack up free nights quickly.

Would be useful to have a series of articles on the elite benefits across all the major chains. I don’t mean benefits on paper- I mean reported or anecdotal benefits (e.g. Upgrades, welcome gifts etc.)

For example, I am Gold in HH, Club Carlson & Plat in IHG, but none of them are top tier. I just cannot decide which one to put more stays/effort into.

What about the EVEN hotels ? Do we think they offer bonus points?

I have Spire elite and ambassador status – last weekend, Crowne Plaza Nairobi upgraded us to a room on the club floor and club access for 2.
They promised a welcome gift of fruit, but this never arrived, so the girl at checkout gave me the 600 points. They gave me the drinks voucher, and went to check on whether I could get a second guest voucher but confirmed it was for the Spire member only.

Sounds like this is very much in line with the European rules.

I had originally booked the Intercontinental but they were adamant that we would not get lounge access without paying, so I switch to the CP. A nice enough hotel, but if anyone is heading to Nairobi soon, then I would recommend the Radisson just round the corner. Very nicely renovated and quite impressive public areas – great views from the verandah

I have always described Spire Elite as useless, but in a stay at a Holiday Inn in Vancouver BC this June we were welcomed and given an enormous suite (albeit with a tiny bathroom). It was only one night which is easier to upgrade and the not very good breakfast was expensive.
But I would not make any effort to retain (last year I used the upgrade to Ambassador wheeze) if a straight match to Hilton Diamond is no longer available.

I just really can’t get my head around why IHG treat their top tier guests so badly. Why offer soo little!! There’s no incentive whatsoever for me to move my stays from Marriott and Hilton to IHG properties.

    • Brian says:

Because they don’t have to, going by this site. They have pretty generous promotions offering what sounds like a lot of points and people will go out of their way to complete the challenges in order to get the points, because they think that a night in an IC is worth £250 and so that’s what they value 50-60,000 points at. But the number of ICs that are actually worth £250 a night is very small indeed, and there is generally a better and cheaper option nearby anyway.

If you’re into racking up large numbers of points, IHG is the way to go. If you actually want decent status recognition and quality of accommodation when staying, then it generally isn’t.

CP Marlow, CP lon city, and CP dublin airport have all given me lounge access on each stay this year. Cp heathrow has given me on 2 of 5 stays i think.
Stayed at the indigo Kensington on points for wimbledon last week and go upgraded to an oversized room, which was huge – however the rinks vouches didn’t have any mention of a signature drink.

OT. Does anyone know whether Virgin will have a premium economy sale in July? They had a decent one this time last year.

    • Graham Walsh says:

I remember it was September last year and was 30% off using points. Got a good deal to the US over Easter this year out of it in PE.

  • Leo says:

I got a free taxi transfer to another part of the island in Bali as a “Spire Ambassador” in March whilst staying at the IC. It was made clear that this was because I was a “bit more” than just an ambassador. It was worth about £30. I think you can get value from being Spire – the extra 25K points for a start but IHG are flaky and unreliable on this. I don’t stay in hotels for work enough to make it to status (would probably get silver in Hilton if I made the effort) so the combination of work stays and banging my tax through the IHG card means I get to Spire easily enough. Then if I’m lucky I can match to Hilton. Will probably resort to Platinum Amex next year for a couple of weeks when the Hilton Diamond bites the dust.
