Earn triple Avios when you fill up at Shell

Back in June I wrote this excessively complex article about the most effective way to earn Avios points when buying petrol.

Shell did not come out of it too well – you would earn a lot more Avios by buying your petrol at a Tesco garage, or an Esso garage with a Tesco convenience store attached.

Shell Drivers Club Avios

Shell is fighting back, however, with this new promotion:

All Shell Drivers’ Club members will receive triple points when they purchase Shell V-Power Nitro+ fuel during September but we’ve got an exclusive offer for our Avios collectors.

In addition to collecting triple Avios on Shell V-Power Nitro+ you’ll also be able to receive triple Avios on our regular fuel. In short this means 60 Avios per 20 litres on Shell V-Power Nitro+ and 30 Avios per 20 litres on regular fuel. We’ve also extended the offer period…fill up between 5th September and 13th October and see the difference in your Avios balance!

To qualify for this offer, your Shell Drivers Club accounts must be switched over to send your points to Avios.

There is some detail here although the text above was taken from an email.

Ironically, even with triple Avios, you are still better off filling up at Tesco (look at the calculations in the original post I link to above) – but the gap is narrower.

  • Scott says:

My Amex Gold is giving quadruple points at Shell just now (and triple points at supermarket petrol stations); have a clubcard but not the Tesco Mastercard – with the latest Shell triple drivers club points does this tip the balance from Tesco to Shell?

  • FirstFlyer says:

Don’t suppose this works with having your card linked to BAEC which mine is? Shame as I had to speak to Indian call centre to get it changed to BAEC and can’t face doing it again !

  • xcalx says:

I gave up using shell for Avios at the end of the 2000 quarterly bonus’s. I never did fathom out their system, it seemed far too complicated regarding the collection periods to Avios conversion.

  • Stephen says:

I still have 4000+ Shell points from the Mighty Deals promotion. Has anyone received their fuel vouchers yet?

    • Sideysid says:

Also has anyone any idea when the shell points will convert in Avios from this promotion?

      • Stephen says:

I presume that the points for this promotion will be converted in a later period than the one we earned 4000 in. But if it is possible to convert at 3x, it would be great!

I doubt Shell or Avios would tell us.

    • Rob says:

I got an email saying Shell was late sending them out this quarter, not sure what the revised date was

      • Stephen says:

Revised date was a couple of weeks ago.

      • Nick says:

Same here. I rang shell and they said it’d be by the end of Sept.

        • Sinizter says:

The past two conversions were done right at the end of the subsequent quarter. So end of September would be right on that schedule.
