Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

500 Avios, Miles & More or Virgin miles with new Heathrow Rewards sign-up bonus

Heathrow Rewards – the loyalty scheme for Heathrow’s duty free shops – has launched a new sign-up promotional bonus in conjunction with British Airways, although you can redeem the bonus with any of their partners.

These sign-up bonuses come and go. This one is certainly not as generous as some we have seen in the past, but to be honest the offerings have been quite poor since the Heathrow Rewards relaunch in the Summer.

Heathrow Rewards

Heathrow Rewards gives you 1 point for every £1 spent in Heathrow (1 per £10 on foreign exchange) or on the Heathrow Express (online bookings only).

You can redeem your points for Avios (in either or British Airways Executive Club), Virgin Flying Club miles, Miles & More miles, Heathrow shopping vouchers and some other odd bits and pieces, usually at 1 point = 1 mile.  Full details are here.

New members who join Heathrow Rewards will earn 500 bonus points when they spend £30 in their first transaction at Heathrow.  You will also receive 100 points for signing up.

Whilst British Airways is sponsoring this promotion, you are not obliged to send your bonus points to Avios.  You could claim Virgin or Lufthansa miles instead, or take a £5 shopping voucher.

To sign up:

Visit this page on

Click on the Heathrow Rewards link

Click on the ‘Join Heathrow Rewards Now’ link in the pop-up box

Complete the application form – you MUST insert code ‘BA1’ in the ‘Promotional Code’ box on the application form if it does not appear automatically

For the purposes of this promo only, bureau de change transactions are not qualifying purchases – although you still earn points when you exchange money at Heathrow.

You may well already have a Heathrow Rewards account.  If so, you have three options:

open an account for someone else who shares a BA or Avios household account with you, then transfer the Avios to that account

Heathrow Rewards now lets you transfer points between different people – this is a new feature as part of the relaunch.  You could get a card in a random name, spend £30, and then ring Heathrow Rewards to transfer the points to yourself.

if you have only previously converted to one airline programme, you could open another account in your name (different email, different postal address) and then send the points over to Virgin or Miles & More if you usually send them to Avios (or vice versa).  Do not use the same Avios number on two accounts.

If your card does not arrive before your next Heathrow trip, don’t worry. Save your receipts and scan or post them to Heathrow Rewards and they will add them manually.

This may sounds a bit stupid, but where do you put your Heathrow Rewards details when booking HEX online to collect points? It only gives me redeem Heathrow Rewards Points option during the check out process.

You have to spend over £30 to get the bonus? I only ever buy coffee 🙁

I am so annoyed that I have worked at Heathrow Terminal 4 and never bothered with the Heathrow Rewards card. Time and time again I find myself purchasing goods from Duty Free and other shops without collecting those points. Hell, even the staff canteen allows us to claim points! Must start now.

Just joined following another great raffles tip.

I just went to rome (again another great tip from raffles) anyway, I purchased well over £30 and now I’m about to send them the scans (pics) of the receipts to try retrospectively claim the points as I forgot to print the temporary card.

What is interesting is that this promotion should give me the 500 points that raffles talks of but accordingly to the sign up email I should get this once 500 points is reached:

Collect 500 points and you’ll automatically be placed in our Premium Tier where you’ll earn 2 points for every £1 you spend*.

*Points for Premium Tier members will be awarded at the following rate in the following outlets: 2 points per £1 spent in participating retailers, bars and restaurants, Heathrow Official Parking facilities and Heathrow Express online ticketing and 2 points per £10 exchanged at Bureaux de change. Points collected as detailed above are ‘standard’ points. Premium Tier earning continues indefinitely as long as you continue to transact and collect 500 or more standard points every year.

    I’ll see what happens…

The latest offer was 500 points for £30 in the first transaction, not £30 in the first day. That was the pre-Christmas offer.

Also i think the 500 point premium level doesn’t include bonus points (ie from promotions like this). It is only from standard spending points.

      • Rob says:

Agreed as far I understand it on both counts. They are messing about with the bonus rules – it was £30 in one day and then became ‘first transaction’. I would stick to just one transaction on that day, unless all over £30, to avoid any issues over the order they post.
