Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Craziest Tesco deal ever? 62 Avios for every 0.9p spent!

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

This new Tesco grocery deal is, frankly, mad.  I’m not even sure if Tesco will honour it or not.  It is worth a go though.

Tesco is offering 25 bonus Clubcard points for every purchase of ‘world vegetables’ you make.

Before we go much further, you should check if the store which arranges your deliveries (and which could be real or ‘dark’) and which you cannot amend – is eligible for this offer.

Click on this page.  If you are not logged in, no special offer will show.  If you then log-in and the page is still blank, the store which delivers to your house does not sell these ‘exotic’ items.  Sorry.

Let’s look at the offers available for delivery to my house.  I actually laughed when I saw the price of the first few.  You earn 25 Clubcard points for every item.

The ‘bonkers’ deals:

Tesco Rocket Chillies – 1p each (actually 0.9p)

Tesco Okra – 5p each (pictured above)

Tesco Eddoes – 19p each

Some stores, but not mine, appear to have baby aubergines at 13p

The ‘normal’ deals:

Tesco White Flesh Sweet Potatoes – 62p each

Tesco Plantain – 71p each

Tesco Mooli – 71p each

Tesco Cassava – £1.13 each

Tesco Dudhi – £1.31 each

Tesco Yams – £5.38 each

The screenshot below confirms that, for 50 x 1p chillies, I would receive 1,250 Clubcard points:

I know from the comments on the Tesco post yesterday that some people have already placed orders for 99 individual chillies which is the maximum allowed.  The 25 points per item DO show at checkout, so I am guessing that the points will post as long as the items are delivered.

This offer is theoretically also available in store, assuming your local store sells these.  Despite the posters being up, a couple of readers who tried yesterday did not get their points. It is not unusual for Tesco to have issues with new promotions – this one launched on Monday.

You can combine these items with the ‘1500 Clubcard points for a £60 grocery order’ that I reminded everyone about yesterday.

This offer runs until 22nd June – although it is hard to believe it will survive that long if they are effectively giving 62 Avios for every 1p you spend.

You could also convert your vouchers to another partner – theoretically you could spend £90 on chillies and Goldsmiths would give you a £7,500 Rolex …..  However, remember that Tesco is now capping Clubcard points at 30,000 per quarter.  If you earn more than this, it is likely (not guaranteed, but it definitely happens) that you will lose all of the points above 30,000.

So we’ve managed to get the offer withdrawn within 24 hours.

This is why I tend to keep deals like this to myself when I come across them. It may sound selfish but nobody benefits form a loophole that it closed almost before it has been opened.

    • Oly says:

Well each person visiting their store has managed to get the loophole closed in that particular store. If any stores have the shelf label still there then loophole remains.

p.s. this isnt a loophole, it is an offer that is incredibly good value CC points wise, that has been decided upon by someone somewhere on purpose to promote the sale of exotic veg

      • TimS says:

It isn’t a loophole, or an offer with incredibly good value CC points.

It is an offer that has ambiguous (or non-existent) wording where Tesco have meant it to be interpreted one way (and set up their POS systems accordingly) but their online ordering system has been set up to handle it a different way.

Unfortunately it comes down to interpretations of Offer and Acceptance and that your “order” (and any associated CC points) are not confirmed until it is delivered & accepted by the purchaser. CC points at the order stage are indicative only & are the confirmed points balance will be printed on the delivery receipt.

Tesco haven’t changed the offer. They have just not allowed the interpretation of the offer that many of us wanted/hoped for.

        • luckyjim says:

It was possible to obtain 25 club card points on a 1p purchase. i don’t think anybody intended that, hence it was a loophole.

The only reason we were not able to take advantage of the loophole in-store was because of Tesco’s crappy IT systems.

In terms of changing the offer, I’m referring to the instruction (from head office?) to remove the offer labels from the shelves. It does not sound like they were delighted with the popularity of the offer.

  • Jeremy I says:

Just had delivery in the W9 area – no chillis, a truckload of Okra and only 22 CC points to show for it! Back to the day job!

    • Benjamin says:

Did you not send it back!? Presumably your order receipt said differently!

  • vonnie says:

    Just had the delivery.

from £2.26 worth of eddies and 36p of chillies i got 25 extra points…cancel your orders guys ;p

    • Oly says:

did you tell them to take it back?

      • vonnie says:

it was only £3 worth of stuff and i wanted the other items. plus it was raining and the poor guy wheeled it all the way

    • Tom says:

Mine still shows the 7000 clubcard points. I have it set for delivery tomorrow. If the delivery not doesnt show the points im refusing to take the delivery.

      • Oly says:

more than enough evidence here that the delivery wont show anything more than 25 points, I have cancelled my two deliveries

  • Michalis says:

I am getting mine tonight at 7. I was between the first to order yesterday following David’s post.
My card got charged for the whole amount so I assume (hope) I will get my chillies and eddoes and of course the points.
However even if I do get my points seeing that other people are having issues I decided against putting in more orders.

  • Gordon says:

    Shame it finished…..

But how did you find out about it so quickly. Are you just signed up to the Tesco mailing list?

  • oyster says:

When you refuse to take the delivery, do you have to refuse the whole delivery or just the offending okra and chillies?

I’d rather keep the rest of my order as I still need groceries and want to get the 1500pts for the £60 shop.

    • TimS says:

You should be able to refuse individual items.

Afterall, points aside, if the okra/chillis looked poor quality you shouldn’t have to accept them just to retain the remainder of the order.

      • oyster says:

I wonder if I’ll be able to reject 98 chillies and 98 okra and keep the remaining ones for 50pts?

I suspect as they’re weighed this won’t be possible.

  • Oly says:

OT of the year award goes to you

  • Will says:

My local branch gave no points at till. Took customer service staff & supervisor & manager & store duty manager to give 25 points. I returned the additional veges as they would only credit for one item. They said would not remove labelling from shelf. Everything requires head office approval, they wouldn’t even add a notice stating max one 25 point credit per customer, and are unable to change tills. Senior customer service is so bad they threatened to cancel my clubcard as it was apparently my fault, not Tesco’s error. No wonder their results continue to be depressed.

    • Roger Carpenter says:

I got 25 points for a click and collect order. I spoke to groceries and clubcard on the phone, and they asked me to submit my confirmation order (with 1500 points showing) to the email team. Time will tell, I guess.
